Points Worth: 30 possible in total (NOTE: Torrey may adjust this point total as the term goes on to reflect the percentage of our class content/activities spent on this assignment)
Due Date:
Part 1: April 19
Part 2: April 26
Part 3: June 7 (share in class)
Project Overview:
For this project, each class members will select a social justice topic then develop and lead a lesson in their classroom that prompts their students to explore this topic with mathematics. You are welcome to work with a partner on this assignment so talk with Torrey if you would like to do this. This project contains the three parts detailed below. We will spend some of our homework assignments and class sessions during the spring term doing work for this project so your grade for this project includes your participation in and completion of the following class sessions/activities/discussions:
Class session 1.25.23 - In-class Activity introducing the assignment AND discussing key ideas about Social Justice math instruction
To be continued/added to during spring 2023 term...
Part 1: Select the Math Concept for your Lesson
Due: Wednesday April 19
Purpose: For this part of the project, you will describe the math concept(s) that your lesson will focus on and how the concept(s) will help your students explore the social justice topic you selected. The math concept should be one that you will teach this term if you did not plan/lead your lesson earlier this year.
Directions:
Please do the following:
Create a folder for yourself in the Social Justice Math Lesson folder for our class
Make a copy of the Social Justice Math Lesson Part 1 document in your folder for this project (that you made in step #1 above) and fill it out
Part 2: Design Your Lesson Plan and Instructional Materials
Due: Wednesday April 26
Purpose: For this part of the project, you will complete your lesson plan and develop the instructional materials for your lesson.
Directions: Create a lesson plan and instructional materials for your lesson then put a copy of them in your folder for this project (that you made in part 1 step #1 above)
Here is a suggested lesson plan template to use for your lesson.
Example lesson(s):
Kevin's lesson (NOTE: this lesson plan uses a different template so it has a slightly different structure)
Part 3: Reflection on the Design and Implementation of your Place-Based Lesson
Due: June 7 (share in class)
Purpose: For this part of the project, you share your experiences designing and implementing your lesson in your classroom. During our class session on May 17 our class will decide what information we want to share with each other in class on June 1, so additional details about part 3 will be determined on May 17.
Criteria identified May 17:
Lesson Overview including the math and sociopilitical learning topics, how the math and sociopolitical topics are connected, accommodations made for people who felt uncomfortable, how your lesson disrupted or affirmed stereotypes
Is this relevant to your students lives? How so?
Did you get engagement from atypical students?
How did you deal with disrespectful students? negative reactors?
Feedback from students - did they like the SJ aspect?
Limitations of the lesson
Modifications you made/would make (e.g., reading content so that it is more digestible)
What did you learn?
What are you still wondering?
