Due Date:
Part 1 (Select a Math Representation or Resource): Wednesday April 12
Part 2 (Create a Lesson Plan For Your Math Activity): Wednesday April 19
Part 3 (Lead your Math Activity): the date you select in the Lead a Math Activity Sign-up page
Project Overview:
For this assignment, you will work individually to develop and lead a 30-minute activity in our methods this term. Your activity will help our class learn about a math resource that deepens students’ understanding of math concepts and/or procedures. Below is a list of suggested resources. Your activity should include a significant amount of time for our class members to try using your representation or resource. For example, you might give our class members two problems on fraction addition using pattern blocks, a task to complete using Desmos, or time to explore and share activities on the NCTM Illuminations website.
Suggested resources:
Manipulative: integer tiles, pattern blocks, algebra tiles
Math-specific Activity: Which One Doesn't Belong, 3 Act Task, Number Talks, NCTM Illuminations
Math Teaching "Routines": Routines for Reasoning (pick 1), Notice & Wonder (another Notice & Wonder resource, also related to See-Think-Wonder)
This assignment has the following 3 parts:
Part 1 – Select a Math Representation or Resource
Due: Wednesday April 12
For this part of the assignment, you will select your representation or resource. We will generate a list of math representations and resources during our first class session to help you start thinking about possible topics. You are encouraged to gather additional ideas from other teachers at your school:) Once you select you math representations or resource, sign up to lead your activity in class on the Lead a Math Activity Sign-up page.
Part 2 - Create a Lesson Plan For Your Math Activity
Due: Wednesday April 19
For this part of the assignment, you will create a lesson plan detailing what our class will do during your 30 minute time period. You should design your lesson so that our class members spend at least 20 minutes exploring and trying out your representation/resource for themselves.
Directions:
Make a copy of the Lead A Math Activity Lesson Plan Template for yourself in the Lead A Math Activity folder
Fill in your copy of the lesson plan for your lesson:)
Part 3 – Lead your Math Activity
Due: see date you selected on the Lead a Math Activity Sign-up page
For this part of the assignment, you will lead your lesson in our methods class this term:)
