Points Worth: 15 possible in total
Due Date:
November 15 (suggested): Complete Part 1 - Learning about Lesson Planning and Task Analysis
November 30 (required): Complete Part 2 - Prepare a Lesson (including a lesson plan and task analysis)
December 2-10: Meet with Torrey to Discuss my Lesson
Project Overview:
For this project you will create a lesson plan and lesson materials for a lesson that you taught or plan to teach this term and describe how your lesson includes the criteria for lesson plans and "worthwhile" math problems provided in our class and reflects our additional course content.
Additional course content for this term:
constructivist and sociocultural learning theories;
student development of conceptual understanding and procedural fluency;
promoting equitable student participation; and
teacher moves to elicit and probe student thinking.
This project contains the following 3 parts:
Part 1 - Learning about Lesson Planning and Task Analysis (suggested due date November 15)
For this part of the project, you will learn about lesson planning and characteristics of "worthwhile" math tasks:)
Directions for Part 1:
Access your personal folder then create a subfolder in it titled “Lesson Planning and Task Analysis Module”
WATCH CMP Lesson Structure - Launch, Explore, Summarize (NOTE: This video shares examples from a specific curriculum - named Connected Mathematics Project - but the idea of having a 3-phase lesson is applicable to any/all math lessons)
READ Van de Walle, Karp, & Bay-Williams (2016) Ch. 3 (PART OF THE CHAPTER)
Create a document titled “Module Reading Notes” in your “Lesson Planning and Task Analysis Module” folder
WRITE a response to the following 4 prompts on your “Module Reading Notes” page (making sure to cite page numbers and include quotes as you see fit):
PROMPT 1: What do the CPM videos/reading mean when they use the terms "Launch", "Explore", and "Summarize" to describe a math lesson structure?
PROMPT 2: What are each of the 5 practices? How do these practices overlap with the "Launch", "Explore" and "Summarize" parts of a lesson (note: the 5 practices video does not describe this so you need to think about this based on the information you read in the CPM descriptions of lesson structure and 5 practices video)?
PROMPT 3: What guidelines/recommendations do the Smith video and Van de Walle, Karp & Bay-Williams article provide for creating and selecting math tasks?
PROMPT 4: What critiques does Bright have of story problems and what suggestions does she provide to address these concerns?
Part 2: Prepare a Lesson (due November 30)
For this part of the project, you will prepare a lesson for your class. This includes writing a lesson plan and doing an analysis of the math problems/tasks in your lesson.
Directions for Part 2:
Make a copy of the Math Lesson Plan Template - Fall Term in your “Lesson Planning and Task Analysis Module” folder (located in your personal folder) and fill it out for your lesson.
Make a copy of the Task Analysis document in your “Lesson Planning and Task Analysis Module” folder and fill it out for your lesson.
Put any other instructional materials used during the lesson in your “Lesson Plan Modification Assignment” folder and make sure they are linked in your lesson plan.
Here are example lessons that Torrey made for our Algebra Tiles lessons:
Part 3 - Meet with Torrey to Discuss my Lesson (schedule a time from December 2 - 10)
For this part of the project, you will meet 1-1 with Torrey for 30 minutes to talk about your lesson, including how it incorporates and reflects the criteria for lesson plans and "worthwhile" tasks provided in our class as well as how it incorporates and reflects our additional course content for this term.
Directions for Part 3:
Come prepared to talk with Torrey about the following (NOTE: you may want to create a document in your “Lesson Plan Modification Assignment” folder with notes for each topic)
how your lesson connects to and leverages your students' identities and assets;
how your lesson incorporates/reflects the criteria for lesson planning provided in our class (be prepared to reference and cite specific course readings and class discussions where and when appropriate to support your explanation);
how your lesson incorporates/reflects the criteria for worthwhile tasks provided in our class;
how your lesson meets the needs of 2 specific learners in your class (NOTE: you will tell Torrey about 2 specific learners in your class and then share when/how in the lesson you provide support and accommodations for each learner given the supports/accommodations mandated by your school for each learner)
how your lesson plan incorporates/reflects our additional course content for this term (NOTE: please reference and cite specific course readings and class discussions where and when appropriate to support your explanation) - see the list of "Additional course content for this term" provided in the "Project Overview" above.
Lesson Planning and Task Analysis Module Scoring Criteria
(for Part 3 - Meet with Torrey to Discuss my Lesson Plan)
15 points total (allocated as follows):
(4 points) Describes how your lesson connects to and leverages your students' identities and assets
(8 points) Describes how your lesson incorporates/reflects the criteria for lesson planning provided in our class (3 part lesson structure AND 5 practices) AND our additional course content for this term (i.e., constructivist and sociocultural learning theories)
(3 points) Describes how your lesson incorporates/reflects the criteria for worthwhile tasks provided in our class - evidence for this in Task Analysis
NOTE: the following were criteria Torrey initially included for this project but found we did not have time to discuss in 1-1 meetings so this is not included in assessment
student development of conceptual understanding and procedural fluency;
promoting equitable student participation
teacher moves to elicit and probe student thinking
how the lesson meets the needs of 2 specific learners in your class
