The Peel District School Board offers two pathways to support students who are Deaf/ hard of hearing. Students are either supported (1) in the mainstream by an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, or (2) in a Learning Hub with other students who are Deaf/hard of hearing by a Classroom Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and an Educational Assistant.
All of our students are also supported by a Consulting Educational Audiologist and the FM Technologist. Please see our homepage for contact information for all members of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing team.
More information about the levels of support provided by the PDSB Deaf & Hearing Department is provided below.
Students in the mainstream who are supported by an Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing receive one of three levels of support, based on their hearing and academic profile. The following provides more information about each level of support:
1) Monitor Level Service- includes monitoring of hearing test results by the Consulting Educational Audiologist + in-service meeting with educators and Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf/ Hard of Hearing to explain hearing profile and accommodations for hearing.
2) Indirect Level Service- includes monitoring of hearing test results by the Consulting Educational Audiologist + in-service meeting with educators and Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf/ Hard of Hearing to provide a demo of RM system technology and explain hearing profile and accommodations for hearing + RM system support as needed by the Itinerant Teacher.
3) Direct Level Service- includes monitoring of hearing test results by the Consulting Educational Audiologist + in-service meeting with educators and Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf/ Hard of Hearing to provide a demo of RM system technology and explain hearing profile and accommodations for hearing + regular RM system checks and academic support by the Itinerant Teacher in consultation with the school team.
Students enrolled in the D/HH Learning Hub are placed through an Identification Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) meeting. The meeting identifies or confirms the student as "Exceptional Communication: Hard of Hearing" and offers a placement in the Deaf/ Hard of Hearing Learning Hub.
