Meet Willie O'Ree

By Elizabeth McLeod and Mike Deas

Hockey is a symbol of Canadian national identity and has historically been exclusionary in terms of race and gender. This resource uses hockey as a vehicle for students in all grades to examine and develop an understanding of what anti-Black racism is and to inspire young people to be agents of change that purposefully create equitable and inclusive spaces.

Using this text we use the sport of hockey to gain an awareness of what anti-Black racism is, how it impacts Black people, and prompt deep discussions on how to reduce anti-Black prejudice in our classrooms, schools, and wider society.

This resource supports the learning of issues concerning race, discrimination, and racism through an exploration of the realities that Black Canadians face, while ensuring safe learning environments for students to discuss these topics in a respectful and reflective manner to build critical socio-political consciousness.

This resource uses the newly released book, Meet Willie O'Ree by Elizabeth MacLeod (2020) as an anchor to guide the conversation around racial discrimination with a focus on anti-Black racism.
