Margaret Boles still making a difference

by Louise Bennett

Margaret C. Boles. There is one place where you may recognize her name from - the Variety Show. Boles deserves all the recognition in the world for what she did for her students.

Boles would give students college loans under two conditions. The first was that they had to pay her back, and the second was that they were not to say where the money came from. She passed on in 1949, yet she is still creating change in students’ lives.

The Margaret C. Boles Foundation provides loans every year to students for furthering their education, and a portion of the proceeds from the Variety Show have always gone to this foundation. It all started with the Class of 1951, who would have been juniors when Boles passed away. They wanted to support the foundation and donate money, and the profit from the show was the perfect way to do that.

Boles made a massive impact on her students through her secret loan program, and now each year, thousands of loans are given to students in her name. Boles accomplished a lot during her lifetime, and her name deserves to be heard more than once a year. Her legacy continues to live on in the Boles Foundation and in the hearts of the students she helped.
