Local students help out with special olympics

by Cassidy Love

Every year our school holds a Special Olympics for select students. Dawn McKenrick, one of the people in charge, gave The Shadow a glimpse of her favorite parts and her experience of helping out.

McKenrick has been a part of the Special Olympics for 25 years as a teacher and she was also the County Manager for Dubois-Jefferson. She plays the role of our district’s point person for Dubois-Jefferson Special Olympics.

“I am the district’s point-person for Dubois-Jefferson Special Olympics—which means I collect all the paperwork needed from teachers and ensure that transportation is taken care of.”

She says that her favorite parts about the Special Olympics is the Parade of Athletes, watching the students compete, and seeing positive interactions between the athletes and their escorts.

There are several events that take place, which include the 25 meter developmental, 50/100/200 meter races, softball throw, and many more.

The Special Olympics will take place on May 1st and because Pennsylvania is unpredictable the event’s rain date is May 2nd.
