Week beginning - Monday 2nd March 2026
Take a peek at all the amazing things we've been learning this week!
The children have approached our new central idea and lines of inquiry with wonderful enthusiasm, curiosity and an eagerness to learn and explore. This week in phonics, we have been focusing on two new digraphs. We have been identifying and applying the 'ew' sound (crew, threw, grew and flew) and the 'er' sound (sister, mixer, herbs and temper) in our reading and our writing tasks throughout the week. In maths, we have been working on numbers to 50. We have been partitioning these numbers into tens and ones, ordering these numbers and placing them correctly on a number line. Our inquiry lessons this week had us exploring how animals help humans. We have discussed and discovered how dogs help people in different ways, including police dogs, guide dogs and sheep dogs. The children creatively thought of questions they would like to ask these dogs about their important roles and responsibilities. Our science lessons this week allowed the children the opportunity to develop their classifying skills. The children worked collaboratively to decide if particular animals were fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, or insects. The children also enjoyed discovering and exploring what it means if an animal is a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. The week concluded with our World Book Day celebrations. We stepped into the wild, celebrating the children's fantastic costumes and enjoyed spending the day celebrating the love of reading and all things books!

You have shown that we don't just learn how to read in year one, we read to learn. You have been busy reading an atlas that had detailed information about every country in the world and made links to prior learning on climates.
