Overview - Timeline - Requirements
The National Honor Society is an organization that helps to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote leadership, and develop character in the students of secondary schools. We offer the National Honor Society for our 10th-12th grade students and the National Junior Honor Society for our 7th-9th grade students.
There are many reasons to be a part of such an organization:
1. NJHS and NHS are prestigious organizations and look excellent on college and job applications.
2. Students have the opportunity to complete community service hours.
3. Students will hone skills such as leadership, collaboration, teamwork, and creative brainstorming.
4. Students will have opportunities to interact with other students at Pacific Coast Academy.
Timeline:
August/September: Emails will be sent to eligible students via their school email address with instructions on how to fill out the Candidate Application Form. HSTs are also notified via email.
September/October: Candidate Application Forms are due
October: The Advisory Committee will look over the Candidate Information Forms and decide who will be invited to become a member.
Students will be notified of the Advisory Committee's decision of who will be invited to be a member.
October: We will hold an induction ceremony via Zoom.
Meet virtually with members and the advisor on a monthly basis (1 hr/month)
Complete an individual community service project of your choice (time varies)
Complete a write-up/reflection activity for your individual community service event
Participate in a chapter-wide community service event (2-3 hours)
Service Projects
Individual Project of your Choice:
Complete an individual community service project of your choice (ex: feeding the homeless, volunteering at a Nursing Home, etc)
Possible Projects: Community Day Volunteer
Complete a write-up/reflection activity for your individual community service event. Your project can be in the format of your choice: i.e., a slide deck, written report with pictures, Canva, or a video. Project Presentations must include:
1. Your full name
2. Who does your project serve
3. Date(s) you completed it
4. Where did you complete your project
5. Description of what you did for your project.
6. Why did you choose to do this project
7. Picture(s) of you doing your project
Group Project:
Participate in at least 1 chapter-wide community service event (2-3 hours)
Possible Projects:
Attend 2-4 virtual LCAP meetings as a student representative.
Volunteer at our College Career Fair: Dream Big Expo
Volunteer at the Beach Clean-up
What is the National Honor Society?
Empowers students with the knowledge, and skills supporting them to be leaders, within their community. NHS membership has been the true mark of student achievement for over 100 years. NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Requirements:
Be a 10th, 11th, or 12th grader in High School
Have a GPA of 3.5
Have been enrolled for at least one semester at PCA
The application process occurs during the fall semester
Candidates will be considered based on service, leadership, and character
Considerations and Benefits:
Membership in the National Honor Society is selective. Members enjoy an elevated status that assists them in solidifying academic excellence and focused leadership. Prospective members should understand the time and academic commitment.

NHS demonstrates a school's commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These 4 pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921 and are still valuable in today's society.
What is the National Junior Honor Society?
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship and helps middle-level students develop the knowledge and skills to become well-rounded student leaders in their school, community, and beyond.
Requirements:
Be in the 7th, 8th grade, or 9th grade
Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher
Have been enrolled for at least one semester at PCA
