What is SEL?
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make decisions as defined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL, "What is SEL?")
CASEL had identified the following five competency clusters: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making.
SEL is at A.M Chaffee and Clara Barton Elementary
A. M Chaffee and Clara Barton Elementary use the MindUP curriculum. The MindUP mission is to help students develop the knowledge and tools they need to manage stress, regulate emotions, and face challenges with optimism, resilence, and compassion.
School Wide Practices:
In addition to our special for SEL using the MindUP curriculum, both schools utilize school wide practices in an effort to enhance and foster students' social emotional learning skills.
School Announcements including Pledge of Allegiance and Be the 3.
Morning breath to begin our day with calmness and focus.
Morning meeting in classrooms to develop social emotional learning skills.
PTO sponsored events that promote mindfulness, kindness, and gratitude.
