Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning
This is a new special that has been introduced to A.M. Chaffee Elementary School. Mindfulness is focusing on the present moment without judgement. The practice of mindfulness teaches students how to pay attention which is an important skill for academics and social emotional learning. This class is designed to introduce mindfulness in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. Each week students are introduced to a new breath, mindful skill, mindful movement, and yoga pose while also incorporating aspects of the Second Step social emotional learning curriculum. This program is designed to help children develop attention skills, impulse control, sensory awareness, emotional regulation, and empathy. It is our intention that this program will help students manage stress and increase well-being thus creating more effective learners.
Meddy Teddy is a bendable meditating, yoga and mindfulness teddy bear that is used in our classroom. Each week Meddy Teddy is in a new yoga pose. We talk about the pose and try it out! Students love to check out the new pose of the week! Please check out the above Meddy Teddy link showing our classroom and newspaper article.
