Approaches to Learning
Thinking Skills
This unit we are focusing on supporting and guiding students to show the process of their learning. This will be done via thinking skills. Students will begin recording their thinking throughout the unit.
In our upcoming unit we will be diving into an inquiry of “How We Organize Ourselves” This inquiry looks at how everything in our world—people, plants, animals, and the way we do things—is connected!
We will explore the systems, structures, and networks that help our community work together and thrive! At home you and your family can list the people who help your community be successful and talk about the ways these people help our community. Take a walk around your neighborhood, a local park, or even just look out your window. Bring a notebook and list the people who help your community. You can even think about how nature and the way people interact with nature helps our community thrive. Have discussions around how different jobs and different steps of trade are all connected to provide one simple item for example a loaf of bread or a carton of milk. You and your child can map out all the steps and people involved in getting that item to your table or home.
Drawing or writing out the "chain" in a flowchart is a great way to visually see these steps
Example (Milk):
Cow ⬅️Dairy Farmer ⬅️Milking Machine ⬅️Truck Driver ⬅️Processing Plant ⬅️ Grocery Store Worker ⬅️ Your Family.
Language Policy Connection: In our classrooms we have been introducing a different greeting during our morning meeting activities such greetings include, Buenos dias, Shalom, and Konnichiwa. We will continue to introduce other greetings from different languages to highlight and engage students how different ways to say hello.
