Unit of Inquiry:
How we Organize Ourselves
How parts of a system help it to function
As Principled members of the community, we act with integrity and always put the greater community before our individual needs. Choosing to do the right thing over what solely benefits us is always the correct choice and helps to promote responsibility and interconnectedness
Through this unit, students are working to develop their thinking skills by reflecting, analyzing, evaluating, and forming decisions. They will also be considering new perspectives, generating new ideas, and making connections to transfer understanding across disciplines.
Students will be working on the concepts of causation and responsibility, evaluating their position in their community, how their decisions impact the greater good and overall progress towards common goals.
Test Prep:
Our students during Test Preperation used critical thinking skills. They were analyzing the test questions by reading and re-reading them to make sure they understood what they needed to do. They also were analyzing the answers they wrote to check for mistakes. They were looking for key information to help them figure out if they were adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing a problem. They were also self evealuating by reflecting on their work in cases where to make improvements or continue with what they were doing successful.
At Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools, we believe all teachers are language teachers. Language is the major element that connects the curriculum. The focus of language is its application across the subject areas to provide an authentic context for learners to develop and use language socially and academically. In 4th grade, we introduce weekly vocabulary words from the texts we read, encourage the use of content area vocabulary, and push students to extend their thinking while communicating their ideas. We also believe being bilingual is a superpower, and we value students' home language and embrace translanguaging in our classrooms.
