Pillar of the Month: Fairness
How can we as students practice the pillar of fairness? We can practice fairness by considering others, taking turns, reflecting on our choices and making decisions that not only benefit ourselves but benefit our community as a whole.
Fourth Grade has been focused on developing as a community. Developing strong relationships and considering our personal contributions to our classroom communities, as well as our neighborhood communities, has helped us develop a sense of belonging, responsibility and connectivity.
Students evaluate the extent to which communities are shaped by natural and human-made changes, and reason through the responsibility of members to respond to such changes.
Communities: Over the school year, students have investigated numerous communities and how they have been impacte by both natural and human-made changes over the course of history. Students have been asked to evaluate community response to change and determine how much each individual must contribute to the community they associate with. Conversations have been insightful, colorful and thought provoking as students have tried to rationalize subjects such as colonization, immigration and human rights.
Fourth Grade spent a considerable amount of time honing our schools for the state test. While students had time to practice independently, they also had opportunities to engage in fun, meaningful and collaborative practices.
Science:
Fourth grade students thoughtfully analyzed soil samples, discussing what was necessary for living things to flourish in nature. They engaged in meaningful conversations about the life cycle and how our planet is interconnected.
At Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools, we believe all teachers are language teachers. Language is the major element that connects the curriculum. The focus of language is its application across the subject areas to provide an authentic context for learners to develop and use language socially and academically. In 4th grade, we introduce weekly vocabulary words from the texts we read, encourage the use of content area vocabulary, and push students to extend their thinking while communicating their ideas. We also believe being bilingual is a superpower, and we value students' home language and embrace translanguaging in our classrooms.
