Unit of Inquiry:
How the World Works
Living Things and Ideas Change Over Time
As inquirers, we nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
Through this unit, students are working to develop their thinking skills by reflecting, analyzing, evaluating, and forming decisions. They will also be considering new perspectives, generating new ideas, and making connections to transfer understanding across disciplines.
Students will be working on the concepts of change and form by thinking about how things have changed throughout time and what things are like. We'll be focusing on properties, structure, and transformation.n
Learning Experiences:
This month, in writing and science, students are working on learning about the physical and behavioral adaptations of both animals and people. We study animals and identify how they have adapted to their environment. Students are researching an animal of their choosing to create a nonfiction expository book and also a diorama to depict the adaptations they've learned about. In Social Studies, students are beginning a unit on Native American tribes of the New York area. They're learning about how the Iroquois and Algonquian groups adapted to the environment of New York. We'll be visiting the American Museum of Natural History to view exhibits of real artifacts to add to our learning. Once students make connections about these groups, they'll be participating in projects to visually represent what they've learned. Check back next month for more photos!
At Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools, we believe all teachers are language teachers. Language is the major element that connects the curriculum. The focus of language is its application across the subject areas to provide an authentic context for learners to develop and use language socially and academically. In 4th grade, we introduce weekly vocabulary words from the texts we read, encourage the use of content area vocabulary, and push students to extend their thinking while communicating their ideas. We also believe being bilingual is a superpower, and we value students' home language and embrace translanguaging in our classrooms.
