Unit of Inquiry:
How the World Works
Living Things and Ideas Change Over Time
As inquirers, we nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
Through this unit, students are working to develop their thinking skills by reflecting, analyzing, evaluating, and forming decisions. They will also be considering new perspectives, generating new ideas, and making connections to transfer understanding across disciplines.
Students will be working on the concepts of change and form by thinking about how things have changed throughout time and what things are like. We'll be focusing on properties, structure, and transformation.n
Science Learning Experiences:
This month, students completed their projects about the physical and behavioral adaptations of animals.. Students created nonfiction books to share their learning. They included organized facts and text features such as pictures, diagrams, maps, and captions. They then culminated this learning by dissecting owl pellets!
In Social Studies, students continued learning about Native American tribes of the New York area. They are learning about how the Iroquois and Algonquian groups adapted to the environment of New York. This month, we visited the American Museum of Natural History and were able to view exhibits of real artifacts to add to our learning! Students have also begun creating their dioramas to visually represent what they've learned.
At Our World Neighborhood Charter Schools, we believe all teachers are language teachers. Language is the major element that connects the curriculum. The focus of language is its application across the subject areas to provide an authentic context for learners to develop and use language socially and academically. In 4th grade, we introduce weekly vocabulary words from the texts we read, encourage the use of content area vocabulary, and push students to extend their thinking while communicating their ideas. We also believe being bilingual is a superpower, and we value students' home language and embrace translanguaging in our classrooms.
