Learner Profile Attribute: Communicators
Our first graders are leaning into the IB Learner Profile trait of being Communicators by getting to know their classmates and teachers, making new friends, and sharing their thoughts, ideas, and opinions. They are learning how to express themselves clearly, listen to others, and take on new responsibilities as part of building a respectful and caring classroom community.
Our Language Policy
In first grade, language is at the heart of everything we do. We help students grow as confident speakers, listeners, readers, writers, and thinkers. Every child comes to the classroom with their own language experiences, and we build on those to support their learning and relationships with others.
Students are demonstrating strong communication skills and open-mindedness by respectfully sharing and listening to each other's feelings during morning meeting. As they turn and talk about what makes them feel certain emotions, they are expressing themselves clearly while also showing empathy and appreciation for different perspectives.
Students demonstrated kindness and cooperation by playing with play to learn toys and sharing math manipulatives. Students used them collaboratively to count and make groups up to 10. They showed open-mindedness by listening to their classmates’ different strategies for grouping, and kindness by playing together respectfully, taking turns, and switching seats with one another to ensure everyone felt included.
During math, students played kindly and cooperatively while playing "Find the Missing Number: How Many More to Make 10.'" They took turns, encouraged one another, and worked together to solve problems in a fun and respectful way.
At the book fair, first graders showed kindness by helping their friends pick books and sharing favorite genres. Students were respectful to each other and to the books, and were responsible by putting everything back where they belonged!
