During this time of home learning, we aim to improve and build upon your design skills. Each week you will be given the next section of the project. On each page it shows you and example of what you should do that week.
We will also put some fun activities on so you to complete if you want some more Design and Manufacture work.
Week 1 2020
Have a look at the following products and the inspiration behind them, feel free to look at the other products on the Dyson website. Research you own favourite products!
Week 2
Quizzes, watching design programmes, creating google slides to share your thoughts and games. What more could you ask for?!
Don't forget to complete the quiz sent to your google classroom
Create a google slide about your favourite design in this episode
Create a game using household items like marbles, tennis balls, kitchen roll tubes and create a game you and your family can play. Enjoy!
Week 3
Its sunny outside! So lets design something that could be used outdoors, it could be a bench for a park, a tool for using in the garden, a vertical garden for on a balcony/small outdoor area or a gadget to make a gardening task easier. Try to sketch your design in detail with annotation (comments) describing each of its features and if possible add colour.
Remember to stay safe and stay at home!
Think about the materials you have used this year, write a short description about the following materials
Pine
Mahogany
MDF
Plywood
Remember you can use google to research your answers.
Week 4
Watch the following youtube clip on SCAMPER.
If you can try to lay out your page mind map style as shown in the image below. Pick a product in your house and draw it in the middle of the page (where scamper is positioned on the image below) then use SCAMPER to adapt it seven times, each of the circles on the image should be a drawing on your piece of paper.
Research the following metals:
Aluminium
Mild Steel
Copper
Brass
We use to first two in the school and the other two are very useful for a whole range of different products.
Week 5
Watch the video above on YouTube.
It is Graham's story on the Big Life Fix and answers the following questions after watching.
Why was Graham so frustrated?
Why were people treating Graham differently?
What discovery helped to change Graham's life?
What was the designers’ solution to aid Graham?
Can you think of any way to improve their design?
Design your very own VANS trainers, you can upload your design to the website and they will produce a 3D model of your design on a real pair of VANS trainers.
You can use the patterns already uploaded to the site of even better you can draw your own pattern, photograph it and upload it.
Look at the PDF file attached to the post for more info.
Week 6
Create a slide full of pictures of different side tables. There should be lots of images for you to use as inspiration in task 2. You could use tables for the side of a couch or for the bedside.
Submit this on a google slide please.
Draw out 3 of your own designs for a side table. Remember to be creative and that drawing your idea in 3d is the main aim, however drawing the idea in 2D from the front can help people to understand your idea. Each idea can have 2 or 3 drawings showing additional details.
Check each of your ideas has:
Well annotated (comments on the features of the table for example a cup holder)
Colour applied (either with coloured pencils or through annotation)
Materials listed (eg silver aluminium legs with a pine table top)
Week 7
This week I would like you to pick your favorite idea from your 3 side table designs last week and develop it. I would like you to ensure you include all the normal information on each of your developments:
Well annotated (comments on the features of the table for example a cup holder)
Colour applied (either with coloured pencils or through annotation)
Materials listed (eg silver aluminium legs with a pine table top)
When developing remember to think about what you are changing but more importantly why you are doing it. Your original idea will have flaws that you may want to improve.
You could make it more sturdy by adding larger legs.
You could add some storage to your idea.
Develop it to have a secondary function, maybe to have a cup holder or phone stand.
I would like you to develop your side table at least 4 times. Start off by drawing your favourite idea on the sheet and then develop one part of it at a time.
Please take clear pictures of your developments and attach them to the same google slide that has your moodboard and your ideas on it.
Week 8
Can you research the following finishes for wood and find out the difference between each of them.
Varnish
Stain
Paint
Oil
Wax
What are the advantages? Are there any disadvantages? Do you still see the wood grain? Does it change the colour of the wood?
Practice your sketching and shading in 3D with this quick 2 minute video.
Another quick sketching video which also practices shading. Lots of videos available on youtube-great way to practice your sketching skills.
Week 9
Pick a product in your house and sketch it- adding texture and colour to show materials. Annotate (comment) around it to tell me the details about the products function.
Consider the product from Task 1 and think about a redesign of that product, think about all the ways to change a product, you have already used these skills in scamper.
Substitute
Combine
Adapt
Modify/Minimise/Maxify
Put to another Use
Eliminate
Re-Arrange
Sketch out your new product, again adding texture and colour to show materials. Annotate (comment) around it to tell me the details about the products function.
Week 10
We use Acrylic in the school workshops for models that require plastic. It is also the plastic that we cut on the laser cutter. There are many more plastics that you need to know about in the D&M course. Please research the following plastics:
Acrylic
ABS
Polypropylene
Polystyrene
Expanded Polystyrene
Melamine Formaldehyde
Urea Formaldehyde
I am looking for two bits of information for each plastic- the plastics properties and its uses.
Design a table for a 5-8 year old to use for LEGO. Please use the following standard component (green LEGO baseplate) as part of your table top.
You may want to consider a number of different issues:
Storage of LEGO blocks
Colour or size sorting
Place to build
Do they sit at table or kneel at it (height of table)
Colour of table (aimed at girls/boys or both)
Safety (young kids need rounded corners on products)
PLEASE HAVE A LOOK ON GOOGLE IMAGES - LOTS OF INSPIRATION THERE!!!
Week 11
Watch the video of a product designers warm up exercises. There are lots of tricks and techniques he tries within the video:
He is relaxed and sketches without a ruler.
He also sketches lightly at first and then draws over lines darker
He uses simple shapes
He applies different colour and shading to selected shapes.
He makes sure shapes overlap each other.
Uses lots of different pens, pencils, markers.
Have a go yourself, it's all about practice, having fun and not being too bothered about making mistakes, remember to draw everything lightly at first. And use a range of different pens, pencils, crayons you have around the house.
HAVE FUN!!!
