Course Description:
Welcome to the book study of Removing the Mask: Giftedness in Poverty by Paul S. Slocumb and Ruby K. Payne. This book highlights the work of Ruby Payne, who is best know for her work on the "hidden rules of the economic class" and how they affect learning. Attention is given to uncovering the assets of students living in poverty and will help you gain a perspective and tools in identifying gifted students from low socioeconomic environments who are in your classrooms. My goal for this study, is to give you an idea of what the experts are saying about students who live in poverty and have you think about what the book says and how you might implement at least parts of it into your classroom. I hope you find the reading helpful in your professional development.
