Pumpkin Decorating with Gray Matters
By: Haley Ruser
At Orion’s Gray Matters meeting on Wednesday, October 29, the chapter celebrated Halloween by drawing on pumpkins, which featured Snoopy, black cats, and other images related to the holiday. This meeting tends to be one of the most anticipated, fueling creativity and excitement for Friday’s events.
The Purpose:
Creative freedom through expression and creativity promotes leadership and bonding, especially in workplaces or organizations, such as the Gray Matters Collective.
Creativity increases essential life skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration.
In culture and society, expression is what makes each person unique, showcasing traditions, beliefs, and art.
Ideas for Home:
Carving/decorating pumpkins with family or friends
Baking pumpkin bars, cookies, and other fall treats
Throwing a Halloween party
Decorating the house with warm, fall tones
Writing a short Halloween story
The Impact:
The participants in the activity were able to either take their pumpkins home or display them for other students to see, encouraging the members to be proud of their artwork.
This activity perfectly embodied Gray Matters’ mission: promoting self-care, connection, and creativity.
Volleyball Clinches Regional Four-peat
By: Allyssa Peterson and Mrs. Kershaw
The final game of the season was a great one for the Chargers. They faced the Rock Island Rocks and had a 2-1 win to end the season with an overall record of 21-15 and a conference record of 8-2. Several Chargers had outstanding performances in that game, including Ellie Knupp. She had 10 digs and 3 aces, but most notably her 12 kills pushed her over the 500th career kill count. Claire Haars also had a stand-out game, racking up five digs and three aces. The team as a whole had 13 aces in total.
The post-season began the following week, and the Chargers rose to the occasion. The team defeated the Spartans in just two sets with final scores of 25-18 and 25-10.
Their win over Ridgewood set them against St. Bede the following night. The Bruins took the first set 25-22 before the Chargers answered with a 25-22 win themselves in the second set. The Chargers dominated the final set 25-13 to earn their spot in the regional championship. Mallory Pronschinske, Ellie Knupp, and Elli Mielke each had kills in the double digits (10, 13, and 11, respectively), and Delaney Tapscott led the team in aces with three and digs (17).
The team played their final match of the week on Oct. 30 as they battled Putnam County for the regional title. The Chargers just missed their chance to take the first set, losing 25-27. They bounced back with a 25-13 in the second set. Just as they did before, the team took control of the third set and brought home with the W with a score of 25-10.
The Charger will begin their sectional play on Tuesday, November 4 at Abingdon-Avon High School at 7 p.m. Brimfield.

Two Aircrafts Crash in the South China Sea
By Andan Nguyen
On Sunday, October 26th, 2025 the USS Nimitz, an aircraft carrier of the American pacific fleet, began routine flights and inspections. They were repairing and sending planes and helicopters for test flights. For several hours the flights went well. During the inspections, 2 aircrafts, a jet and a helicopter were out flying. Within 30 minutes of each other both US Navy aircrafts declared mayday and crashed in the South China Sea.
The USS Nimitz which was 143 Nautical miles off the coast of the mainland Malaysia, AKA the Malay Peninsula got word and recovery teams began their recovery operations. The fighter jet that went down is known as the F/A-18 Super Hornet and had 2 aviators in the jet. Both were able to safely eject with no injury in international waters. The Helicopter designated the MH-60 Romeo Seahawk, went down with 3 Personal on board, thankfully all 3 of which survived. The USS Nimitz had successfully recovered all 5 personnel within the hour and all 5 were found uninjured.
There were many fears for the location of the pilots during the recovery effort. The South China Sea is a highly disputed area as multiple nations such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines lay claims. The sea is also heavily militarized as hundreds of naval vessels, friendly or hostile, reside. If 5 American pilots were to fall into disputed or hostile waters it could be dangerous for the fate of the personnel and can be used as a chip against the United States.
Military investigators began looking into the incident the following day and as of today, Friday, October 31st, both investigations have yet to reach a cause and remain inconclusive. Here is what they were able to figure out, there are no signs of enemy engagement or foul play. The leading theory is some form of mechanical failure. The White House made a statement and from what officials have been briefed on they believe that it is “bad fuel.”
Though thankfully it was not an enemy attack, geopolitical professionals believe that it will cause international rivals, such as Chinese officials, to see and believe that the United States is not as strike ready and powerful as they have been led to believe.
With the Gen Z Revolutions going on and 2 major active wars the United States must be powerful and competent in their equipment, these crashes were a big blow on the global stage.
Most and Least Wanted Halloween Things
By: Kadence Hammer
In honor of Halloween, there are a lot of different types of candy someone would want to receive in their bag or basket when trick or treating. Some of the most popular candies are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kats, and Sour Patch Kids. Reese’s has a good balance of sweet and savory. This candy also has a crunchy texture. Kit Kats are also a nice treat to share with friends and bring nostalgia to a lot of people who eat them. It is also nice to receive something to drink, so you are able to drink something when you are trick or treating. However, there are many things that should not be handed out on Halloween, like fruit. There are not many people who are going to be thrilled to come up to a house, knock, and receive the disappointment of an apple or banana. But finally, there is one thing that everyone looks forward to coming across when trick or treating, and that is the house that isn’t monitored with a bowl that says “take one.” This is always exciting because you can basically take half the bowl and leave nothing for the rest of the trick or treaters.
