Seniors: Start Your Scholarship Search!
By: Haylee Downing
Graduation is coming up in a few months, and many of us are planning on attending college next fall. While you may be sitting there thinking that you still have plenty of time, I can assure you that it’s never too early to start working towards financing college. There are many resources available to help you financially, but I want to focus on all of the scholarship opportunities that you may not know about. There are so many websites that provide thousands of scholarships.
ScholarshipOwl is the main source that I recommend. So far, I have applied for over 20 scholarships, and there’s many of them that don’t even require an essay! All you have to do is fill out your information so that ScholarshipOwl can match you with scholarships that will be best applied to you. The scholarships range from $500-$100,000. Most scholarships require essays and questions, but I can assure you that they aren’t difficult. Plus, writing a 1000 word essay doesn’t seem too terrible when there’s a chance that you can win thousands of dollars for it.
I also want to bring up some additional sources that you can think about using. I personally don’t use these ones as much, but they can still be helpful. Niche is a popular place to find a ton of scholarships, and they are even offering a $50,000 no-essay scholarship. Access Scholarships, Big Future, and Bold.org are other sources that I have looked into that can provide a ton of scholarships for you. You should also look into scholarships within your community, your work, sports, and clubs that you participate in because there could be hundred available to you that you wouldn’t have known about!
We still have a year until college starts, but it’s good to start working towards heading to college debt-free right now. Lots of scholarships are first-come-first-serve, so be the first one to apply and get in the chance to win! Having the opportunity to earn money is better than not having that chance at all. Start your scholarship search today!

This year during the Hunger Drive there was a total of 3,038,599 meals of food donated throughout all the schools who are a part of it. Out of all those meals, Orion had 24,614 meals. Those meals totalled out to being 16,627 pounds, which comes out to be 60.02 pounds per student. Our school placed 2nd overall in division B. Mrs. Nightengale, our student council leader stated, "2nd place in our division, but I am most proud of the mission challenge award!" The student council would like to say thank you to everyone who donated and participated. The ending results of the 5th hour competition are:

Congratulations to these classes!
When is it Too Early for Christmas?
By: Haley Ruser
Every year, Mariah Carey typically releases her “defrosting” video around November 1st, marking the start of the holiday season. However, there is an ongoing debate on whether Christmas in November is acceptable.
Not allowed:
Thanksgiving is underappreciated when Christmas overtakes the month of November
People can forget about the purpose of November: gratitude
Christmas Day can feel underwhelming or rushed if there is too much build-up for it
Stores starting early sales can promote consumerism or greed
Allowed:
There is more time to enjoy the holiday.
Christmas lights, trees, and music can make the colder months more enjoyable
Gives students something to look forward to during midterms and final exams
Encourages productivity for buying christmas gifts early
Whether you begin celebrating Christmas November 1st, after Thanksgiving, or December 1st, it is a great time to bond with family and friends while making memories that will last a lifetime.

Police raid in Brazil ends with massacre, 121 dead
A police raid in Brazil that occurred last week just now hit international headlines describing a massacre that took place that left police, criminals, and several civilians dead. It remained on the low until pictures of mutilated dead bodies reached news sources in the United States, which then led to statements from Brazil's president to reach other headlines.
On Tuesday, October 28th 2025 the Brazilian security forces in Rio De Janeiro began an operation against a gang known as the “Red Command.” The police forces were planning to execute over 100 arrest warrants, 78 of which have extensive backgrounds in criminal violence. Security forces in the thousands, numbered in the thousands they thought they would execute it swiftly.
The reason for such a massive raid is that the Red Command gang has expanded largely and swiftly over recent years. In the last year alone they had gained a lot of territory from other rival gangs, such as their main rival, Capital Command. They are known as one of the largest gangs in all of Brazil and they traffic drugs, rule entire towns.
Before the raid started, gangsters noticed the thousands of cops in their area moving in and notified their ring leaders. As security forces approached their neighborhoods and homes many gang members began to take up arms. Other gang members escaped into a forest near the neighborhood, however police forces had already surrounded the entire forest.
For the next several hours the ensuing battle led to extreme bloodshed. In the forest, surrounded and outnumbered, gangsters threw everything they could to inflict as much damage on police officers as possible. Though not many cops were killed in the forest, several were injured.
In the streets drones controlled by gangsters dropped bombs on police officers. Several bombs destroyed vehicles, civilian infrastructure and gave several cops severe 3rd degree burns. From hidden positions other gang members opened fire on more police officers. The battle in the streets unfortunately led to the deaths of some civilians and the bombs killed a few police officers, another officer had to have his leg amputated.
By the afternoon of Tuesday, October 28th, 121 people lay dead all over Rio De Janeiro. 99 of the dead were confirmed criminals. 4 police officers were killed in the bombings. The other 18 bodies have yet to be fully verified as many of the bodies were severely mutilated by bullet wounds, stabbings, and burns. Several gangsters went haywire and killed some of their own and killed some civilians. The body of a 19 year old was found shot several times, while a body of a 14 year old kid was found decapitated, and the gangster that killed him had been found dead.
The massacre was so heinous that government officials and Brazil's president requested that investigators internationally or outside investigators looked into the incident as they feared there were unjust murders or avoidable deaths in the situation. The citizens of Rio De Janeiro however look at the situation differently. News sources and magazines in the area interviewed the people over the massacre. Even though many were killed the public have been very supportive of the raid and believe that it was a good act. Though the deaths could have been avoided, the streets of Rio are undeniably safer without killers and millions of dollars of narcotics in the city.
Top Thanksgiving Dinners
By: Kadence Hammer
With Thanksgiving in a couple weeks, there are a lot of different types of food to look forward to when eating with your families. Obviously, the most popular food that will more than likely be on every Thanksgiving table is a turkey. Hopefully, you don’t have to eat a dry turkey. One of the most popular side dishes at a Thanksgiving dinner is mashed potatoes with gravy. Another popular side dish would be stuffing, which could also be considered a hated thanksgiving dish. Going along with that cranberry sauce is also a very popular dish, but is also a very contriversal food and not many people believe it should belong at Thanksgiving. Finally, desserts are one of the best things to look forward to after you are done eating, and that is a variety of pies. Pumpkin, Pecan, and Apple Pie are some of my most favorite desserts and the Thanksgiving table.
