Kicking Off the Season with a Kickline

The OHS Cheer and Dance team has started to prepare for their upcoming season. They begin with a kickline this Friday which is also Tackle Cancer night. We’re going to be honoring those suffering with breast cancer this Friday. The cheerleaders have spent two weeks practicing and perfecting this dance, and everyone is excited to show off their hard work.
Here are some interviews from the cheer team: “How do you feel about the game on Friday, and what are your thoughts on performing this year's kickline?”
Kenna Edmunds: “A little nervous, but excited. I feel good about the kickline, and I am excited to perform it so I can stop stressing about it.”
Brandon Bakener: “I am excited to perform the kickline, hopefully this season will go well.”
Rory Martin: “I am excited, I feel a little worried, but honestly I think it'll be okay. I think we’ll learn a lot from this game.”
Rachel Manecke: “I’m really excited for both of them and I think they’re going to be fun. I’m just excited to have that new experience.”
Abby Downing: “I think the game on Friday will go well and I think people will get their view on how the football team will be. As for the dance, I think it’ll go well and I hope that everyone continues to practice.”
Coach Brittany: “I am excited for the football game to see what the new coaches have done with the team. And I’m excited for the new cheer squad to show talent with our first dance being a kick line.”
Starbucks Fall Menu

On August 25, Starbucks is releasing their fall drink menu. It includes multiple new fall flavored drinks to try. Many students are excited about the new drinks, and the returning ones. The newly featured drinks include, Chaider; an apple cider infused chai. Iced Pumpkin Cream Shaken Espresso; a shaken espresso with pumpkin cream instead of vanilla. Pumpkin Spice Chai; a cinnamon chai with pumpkin spice flavor hot or iced. Iced Pumpkin Cream Matcha; an iced matcha with pumpkin coldfoam. Iced Banana Bread Latte; an iced latte with banana, brown sugar, and cinnamon flavoring. Iced Banana Bread Chai; the original chai with brown sugar, cinnamon, and banana flavoring. The returning drinks are the pumpkin and pecan inspired drinks from last year.

4-PEAT Preview

Volleyball will play their first game on Monday, the 24th of August. The Freshman are playing at 5:30pm, JV plays at 6:30pm, and Varsity plays at 7:30pm. The game is held at Erie Prophetstown High School. They have a new JV coach, Libby Carstens. The Orion Volleyball Team has been working hard during practice to be the best they can be. They have been doing drills like blocking with a partner or hitting lines off a toss. Although all the levels start together, they eventually split into two groups of freshman and JV in one gym and varsity in the other. They are trying to focus more on serve receive this year after facing some challenges with serve receive last season. I interviewed a few volleyball players asking them their thoughts on Monday's game. Claire Haars said, “Come in with a good attitude and be ready to work hard because you'll keep high energy throughout the whole game.” Ella Wardlow says, “We have improved throughout the year and are excited to see what this season brings.” Mallory Seabloom says, “Things will go well when we have our serve locked in.” And finally Khloe Nelson said, “It was a challenging first game but we can win.” Overall, the volleyball team has been working hard to prepare for their first game and we are coming into the season with the right mindset.
Football Week 1 Preview

After a long offseason of practices, workouts, and getting ready for the season, Orion Football is finally back. The Chargers will take on Mendota this week in their first game of the season, and there is a lot of excitement around the team.
One of the biggest changes for Orion this year is the new head coach, Matt McClean. With a new coach comes a fresh start, and the Chargers will look to put everything they have worked on in the offseason into action when they take the field this Friday against Mendota.
One player to watch this season, is Sophomore Quarterback Blake Arnold. Even though he is only a sophomore, Blake will have a big job running the Orion offense. He will be looking to make good decisions, get the ball to his playmakers and help lead the Chargers to a strong start.
One of those playmakers is Aaron Mohr, who will be a wide receiver for Orion. Mohr will be an important target in the passing game and will look to make some big plays against Mendota.
Another player to watch is Charley Arnold, who will play tight end. Charley can make an impact both catching the ball and helping block, which makes him an important part of the offense.
While those players will get plenty of attention, football is a team game. Orion will need everyone to do their part if they want to start the season with a win. The offensive and defensive lines will be especially important, and the defense will have to be ready to slow down Mendota's offense.

Girls Golf Kicks Off with Good Season

Girls golf finally kicked off their season on August 17 after getting their first meet cancelled because of the rain. They played at Baker Park Golf Course in Kewanee, IL. and got first place out of three teams. All of the girls were pleased with their scores, but knew they could’ve improved them. Evelyn Wilber shot the number one score in the whole meet, with a 41. On the 19th, the team went to Hiland Springs in Milan, IL. and tied Rockridge for first place out of four teams. All of the girls improved their scores from the first meet and Evelyn got the best score again with a 40. They have a tournament on Saturday at Saukie and have nine more regular meets and three more tournaments left in the season.
