Once a new year begins, people tend to look back and remember the moments from previous years. It’s a slap in the face for some—not realizing that a certain year is now over 10 years old. That happens to be the case this year; 2016 was 10 years ago.
TikTok and Instagram have sparked a new trend where users revisit 2016 through filters, music, games, and much more. In the videos and pictures, users have bold and vintage colors, making the screen pop. The images will also feature hit songs from that year including Justin Bieber’s “Let Me Love You,” and The Chainsmokers famous hit “Closer” featuring Halsey.
“Challenges” were another trend back then, including the mannequin challenge where people would have to stand still with music playing in the background. Snapchat’s infamous dog filter is making it’s a return as well, with some celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Jacob Sartorius.
Film and video games were also rising, with Stranger Things releasing that year. Roblox was also on the rise, as well as Pokemon Go. We also can’t forget our favorite movies that were released that year: Zootopia, Deadpool, La La Land, Moana, and Captain America: Civil War.
2016 is a nostalgic year for most of us, considering that the media was thriving, and everyone was having fun. AI and “brainrot” weren’t rotting kids' minds of stupid humor. We had the debuts of famous memes and the beginning of Music.ly (Now TikTok). And could we ever forget the rise of toys like fidget spinners and shopkins?
2016 is a year I don’t think any of us could ever forget.

Netflix's New "The Rip"
By: Isabella Carstens
Netflix just released a crime/thriller movie called “The Rip.” Popular actors, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, were the stars of the thriller. This duo is widely known for many of the different movies they star in together, one of the more well known is “Good Will Hunting.” The interesting thing about the two is they actually met when they were young and have been best friends since. They have lived together and at one point they said they were even sharing a bank account.
The movie follows a team of cops based in Miami, after the event of their Captain being murdered. They get a tip for a money stash and think it is not very much. Lone behold, it is actually 20 million dollars, and they have to figure out what to do with it. The movie keeps you on your feet and invested in finding out what they will do with the cash and if there is a rat.
Overall, I gave it 4.5/5 and think that if you enjoy crime movies, you will love this one.

ICE and Pre-K
By: Brandon Bakener
Earlier this week, ICE agents have recently detained a five-year-old boy in Minnesota. Reports show on social media of DHS explaining, “ICE did NOT target a child”, but conducted an operation against the boy’s father, an “illegal alien” who “abandoned” his son when approached. ICE agents used the boy to knock on his door and see if anyone was at home to come into contact with “illegal aliens”. The school district regarding the young boy, The Columbia Heights Public Schools described this photo as a “confirmed community bystander” without the identification of knowing who took them. Marc Prokosch, a lawyer who is representing the family, told the press conference that the boy, Liam, and his father are currently being held in a detention centre located in San Antonio, Texas with their attorneys trying to contact them. US President JD Vance, visited Minnesota Thursday to speak with ongoing protests telling reporters, “ICE had no voice because ‘the father ran’.” He also added, “If the argument is that you can’t arrest people who have violated laws because they have children…that doesn’t make any sense.”
"Wicked: For Good's" Oscar Snub
By: James Morse
As one of the most anticipated movies of 2025, fans thought surely “Wicked: For Good” would be honored by the Academy Awards. Yet on January 22, 2026, as the nominees were announced, “Wicked: For Good” received no nominations.
Last year, the first part of the two-part film adaptation received 10 nominations at the Academy Awards, including nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande. Ultimately, “Wicked” won two awards, for production design and costumes.
Early reviews for the second film were mixed overall, yet most reviewers focused intently on Ariana Grande’s standout performance as Glinda, and understandably so. “Wicked: For Good” is more about Glinda’s character development as she goes from being a political pawn under a corrupt regime to fighting against those leaders and restoring peace to Oz. Early predictions labeled her as not only a likely nominee, but the most likely to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
“Variety,” in an article about the controversial lack of nominations, pointed out that the second act of “Wicked” has always been troubled and that the film just didn’t fix the troubled plot. Also mentioned was the separation of Erivo and Grande at the press tour for the second film, a lack of visible emotion from the two together could have added to the decision to not nominate the film
In my opinion, “Wicked: For Good” is a film that matches the qualities of the first film. While I cannot speak on most of the films that were nominated, I feel that this movie was snubbed. At the very least, a nomination for Erivo and Grande would have sufficed. The snub that surprised me the most however was that none of the two new songs were nominated for Best Original Song, and whatever your opinions may be on this film, I feel that many would agree that “Girl In the Bubble” and “No Place Like Home” are far better contenders than “Golden”.
Opinions are divided as to whether or not this was a snub online. Some celebrities and internet personalities have been vocal with their disappointment, like Charli XCX, Trisha Paytas, and Charlie Puth. On social media, many have been in a mini outcry over the film's zero nominations. Some believe that a smear campaign ultimately led to the failure at the Oscars.
