Over winter break, I finished a book that I used for my english paper; it was incredible.
In 2022, Jennette McCurdy released her memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. The actress was best known for her work on Nickelodeon, especially in the shows iCarly and Sam & Cat. The show ended in 2012 and 2014, and McCurdy was quiet about Nickelodeon. An iCarly reboot was debuted in 2021, but there was one problem: Where was Jennette McCurdy?
Source: Entertainment Weekly
I don’t want to spoil the book (because you SHOULD read it), but there are a lot of important topics that I think you should know about before you decide if it’s worth it.
McCurdy grew up as a child actress at the hands of her mother. This memoir dives deep into issues like eating disorders, abusive relationships (surrounding parents and management), substance abuse, and OCD. As dark as the book is, McCurdy does an amazing job of using humor to add some sort of light into her twisted trauma.
That’s about as much as I’ll explain, but I really recommend reading this memoir. It really opens up the dark world of how child actors are treated in the industry and how little power they have over their careers. Fair warning, it is a mature book, so keep that in mind. Overall, it was a powerful read. The chapters are also very short, so it’s a quick read.
If you have interests in Hollywood and the darker truth surrounding the treatment of young actors, this book is made for you. I would also recommend watching the documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids Tv, which uncovers some dark secrets from Nickelodeon. This topic isn’t so hushed anymore, and I think doing your own research will open your eyes into some of the lies the entertainment industry has fed you.

On January 7, 2026 Gray Matters had a meeting where they talked a lot about how everyone is doing and what their favorite things are. They did this by playing a game of Jenga while asking Mental Health questions. A student would pull out a Jenga piece and then they were asked a question about mental health. Some of these questions include:
What is your favorite comfort food?
Name three things you are grateful for.
What is something small that made you smile this week?
What is a fear you would like to conquer one day?
What is one activity that helps you get out of you head?
Those are just an example of 5 different questions out of the 50 questions the student could have been asked. They also did a group action which was a part of their group they were in. During this group action they would choose a wild card to do what it says. Example of these type of wild cards are:
Give a high-five or fist bump to the person on your right
Asak any other player a question of your choice
Everyone takes one deep, collefctive breath together
Pick something in the circle and give them a genuine compliment
This activity where they drew the wildcards concluded their meeting. The members of Gray Matters really enjoyed these activities and had a lot of fun! Here are a few pictures that were taken during this meeting!

Operation Absolute Resolve Removes Venezuelan President from Power
By: Andan Nguyen
Not long after the start of the new year, the personnel of the United States Military and Intelligence Community led a combined operation that ousted the unpopular and criminal president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro.
Nicolas Maduro is known for being corrupt and wildly hated across Venezuela and the world. Even I have a strong distaste for him due to his regime silencing protests and crushing dissent with violence. His regime killed protesters during major demonstrations in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2024.
Maduro is known to have major connections with drug trafficking and also he is involved with the trafficking of illegal goods. He is also wanted for narcoterrorism conspiracy charges which include intimidation and violence to keep his slice of the drug trade afloat. He was so notorious, the bounty that the government placed a bounty of 50 million dollars on him, nearly twice as large as Osama Bin Laden’s bounty of 27 million dollars.
On the night of January 3, 2026; the United States put Operation Absolute Resolve into action. The attack involved every branch of the United States Armed Forces working in a coordinated effort. It started at around 1 AM Venezuelan time, when the Navy deployed and Air Force deployed nearly 150 planes from several aircraft carriers. Reconnaissance planes gathered intelligence to keep a live feed of the ground. Several fighter jets kept guard of their bomber squadrons.
At 2 AM, bombers destroyed several key military targets which killed 40 Venezuelan military personnel. The bombings distracted the Venezuelan military for long enough to give Delta Force, an elite spec ops group of the U.S. Army, their chance to move in. The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) flew the Delta Force Operators into the capital via helicopter.
Before making it to the capital, one of the smaller helicopters got damaged by enemy fire which injured several soldiers. Luckily enough, the helicopter was still flyable. The squadron of Seahawk and Blackhawk helicopters made it to the presidential palace, where Delta Force confirmed that they had boots on the ground. The Special Forces moved through the palace with ease, neutralizing his bodyguards with no problem. Within 3 minutes they reached the president himself.
At roughly 3 AM Delta Force made it back with Maduro and his wife that were taken to the USS Iwo Jima. From there Maduro was taken to the United States and stood trial on January 5th. The mission was a success with no American casualties.
The Venezuelan populace and the Venezuelans in diaspora were overjoyed that the corrupt president had been ousted from power. In Florida, thousands of Venezuelan immigrants and descendants went out in the streets, and cheered over the nation's liberation. Online, immigrants from all over posted their reactions to the removal, many in tears over the news. Back in Venezuela, the people living there showed online and in public that they were ecstatic at the removal of Nicolas Maduro.
However, to some the operation is controversial with many leftists. They believe that the operation was an illegitimate invasion of Venezuela. Many also believe that it is another outreach of American imperialism as the US Government took ownership of the Venezuelan oil fields.
Though there is controversy of the operation, there is absolutely no argument that the operation is one of the most successful in recent memory. I am so impressed with the amount of coordination in this operation. It is impressive that after dropping down Delta Force was able to capture their target in 3 minutes. I am so happy for all the Venezuelan people around the globe who are happy that their country is now free from tyrants. There have been plenty of pretty bad things that the government has done in recent memory but in my opinion, Operation Absolute Resolve is definitely one of the best with the way it rallied.

Top 5 Looks at the Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet
By James Morse
The Critics' Choice Movie Awards were held on Sunday, January 4, 2026, and the celebrities that walked the red carpet gave us some interesting looks, ranging from stunning to strange. Ignoring the strange ones, there were in fact some truly stunning outfits that stood out to me. Here is my ranking of the top 5 looks at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Sheryl Lee Ralph, star of the comedy series Abbot Elementary, which was nominated for multiple awards on Sunday, walked the red carpet in a gorgeous Tony Ward couture dress. The rich burgundy color looked stunning on her, however my quarrels with the dress come from the oddly shaped jeweled neckline and the floral patterns on the skirt that almost make the dress look like an old curtain. Along with this were the heels that didn’t match the red of her dress. Small discrepancies aside, the look was still very sophisticated.
Odessa A’zion, who attended the ceremony in support of the nominations her film Marty Supreme received, donned a silver cutout gown. The silver look was amplified with a shimmering striped look and her simple hairdo, long flowing curls. As much as I want to like this dress more, I found the silver to be a bit jarring, if fact someone compared it to a disco ball. Had it been a bit more muted I would have enjoyed it much more,
Chase Infiniti was nominated for Best Actress for her role in One Battle After Another, and her look was a standout for me. The actress wore a butter yellow Louis Vuitton dress. The dress came from the fashion house’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection. The two piece look with a sculpted top and cape was elegant and daring at the same time. The sculpted top was not my favorite but other than that it was still a very lovely look overall.
Ariana Grande’s performance as Glinda in Wicked received critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Her red carpet look is a stunning pink creation by Alberta Ferretti, a dress that is most definitely a nod to her character in Wicked. The light-pink cape style dress was paired with Swarovski jewelry and for the first time in years, Grande went back to being a brunette, making this her first red carpet appearance with her new hair color. My only complaint about this dress is that it is too light. I wish it could have been a bit of a deeper pink that doesn’t wash her out as much as this lighter pink does.
Wunmi Mosaku’s stunning deep blue dress was the highlight of the night for me. Mosaku was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Sinners, and she did not hold back on the red carpet. Her custom Zac Posen dress, complete with a dramatic cape look, paired with a classy diamond set set her apart from the other celebrities at the carpet. Mosaku may be a lesser known actress, but her look on Sunday showed that she knew how to dress for the red carpet.
