Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste is the largest Latinx union in Oregon. They have three main sub-organizations. Through their 501(c)(3) organization, they improve public education and build empowering communities. Their 501(c)(4) organization builds political power by fighting issues that affect farmworkers on the state and national levels. Within their 501(c)(5) organization, they work on more of the micro-scale of farmworker issues, such as worker rights, collective-bargaining, and improving employee-employer relationships.
More information about the organizational structure of PCUN can be found here.
The CIW operates with a “We are all leaders” philosophy. The 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is made up of a decentralized network that de-emphasizes a bureaucratic structure and allows everyone to be on equal ground. Gourmet Magazine included CIW in a list of "10 Exceptional Food-Related Charities" mentioned here. The CIW doesn't make it obvious that they are a 501(c)(3) charity and that 83% of their funds go into programs. Partner organizations such as the Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFW) operate as a similar decentralized network. Other organizations such as Migrant Justice has adopted their leadership structure into their ideals. Their idea of putting the power to the base of the community empowers farmworkers to forge their own future and not rely on one individual.
Modeled after the successful decentralized organizational structure of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, the core belief of Migrant Justice is that everybody is a leader, and a democratic organization is not a system of leaders and followers but a model of empowerment where everybody can and should lead. The model operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. They operate as a non-aligned or non-affiliated organization. As we learned from our videoconference with staff person Marita Canedo, there is a small staff that runs the daily activities of Migrant Justice. But decisions about priorities, vision, and focus are directed by a group of dairy workers who regularly meet to ensure that the needs and interests of Vermont's dairy workers remain the central focus of the organization.
