The union has led the way in third-party collective bargaining contracts. These have been the structure of all their successful contracts.
FLOC began organizing farmworkers in North Carolina, a part of the U.S where most of our pickles are produced. The working conditions for farmworkers in the field and in their “homes” were inhumane. As you can see, this is a common theme when it comes to farmworkers. So, FLOC organized farmworkers for five years, and finally Mt. Olive Pickles listened. In 2003, another three-way contract was successfully signed between Mount Olive and the North Carolina Growers Association. This contract not only included pickles, but also sweet potato, tobacco, christmas trees, and a few other crops.
Workers voted to boycott Campbell’s in 1979 during their convention. For eight years, they fought hard to win the first ever tri-party contract. This was also the first of its kind within the agriculture industry. This was really the starting point for FLOC because they changed the way that the world began to see farmworkers, and what kind of conditions they were working/living in. In 1983, Baldemar Velasquez, the president of FLOC, lead a 600-mile march with 100 farm workers from Toledo, Ohio. They marched straight to Campbell’s headquarters in the hope to get their attention. After many efforts from everyone, a three-way contract was finally signed. This happened in 1986, and was between Campbell’s Soup, and its tomato and pickle grower associations in Ohio and Michigan. Soon after this win, more contracts were made with Heinz and other major food-processing corporations in the Midwest.
UFW organized consumer boycotts in their 1960's to 1970's table grape, lettuce, and pesticides "Wrath of Grapes" campaigns. The use of consumer boycotts set the stage for subsequent farmworker justice organizations to follow suit but also established a general idea that union contracts only have a staying power when consumers reward growers by purchasing food with union labels. PCUN followed suit by leading a boycott of NORPAC products including the Gardenburger brand of veggie hamburgers. CIW has used the boycott strategy to force fast food companies, grocery chains, and food service providers.
