Blended learning is our option for students choosing to return to campus. This instructional model optimizes safety and full day in-person instruction two days a week, while also reducing the number of students on campus and minimizing the number of transitions from class to class. The Blended Learning instructional model directly mirrors the Distance Learning model in which our students have been learning since the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.
Here are the quick facts regarding what the Blended Learning instructional option would look like for your student:
To start the week, all students participate online on Mondays, checking in with their Spartan Homeroom in the morning. This day is set up for self-guided work time. Teachers will continue to be available for office hours, intervention and enrichment throughout the day by appointment. Clubs also meet on Mondays.
Each cohort will meet for in-person instruction, either Tuesday and Thursday or Wednesday and Friday. Cohort A students receive live, in-person instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cohort B students receive live, in-person instruction on Wednesdays and Fridays.
For days when students are not on campus for in-person instruction, they will start their day by checking in with their Spartan Homeroom online at 8:30 a.m. Once they are dismissed, your student will participate in instruction at home via asynchronous learning for the remainder of the school day.
As with Distance Learning, teachers will be available for Office Hours, Intervention, and Enrichment Tuesday through Friday, 2:45-3:30 p.m.
APEX Learning is our option for students choosing to remain home for the rest of the school year.
The Apex Learning option is set up with an instructional model that closely aligns with a “home study” or “independent study” model. Students who choose this model will remain off campus for the rest of the school year, transitioning from courses taught by OAHS instructors to an online curriculum through Apex Online Learning. Apex Learning courses are rigorous and require a considerable effort. Students need to be ready for challenging content-area instruction that demands considerable reading, writing, research, analysis, and practice.
Here are the quick facts regarding what the Apex Learning instructional option would look like for your student:
First and foremost, we want to maintain your student’s connection on campus. Students will continue to attend his/her Spartan Homeroom online daily. Students can participate in all clubs which meet virtually on Mondays. Additionally, students can participate in sports and school activities, provided they are in good academic standing if in-person campus activities are approved.
Mondays are set up for self-guided work time in any Apex subject. All teachers are available for office hours, intervention and enrichment throughout the day by appointment.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays are set up for a student to work in Apex periods one through three. Thursdays and Fridays are set up for a student to work on Apex periods four through six.
A Supervising Teacher will be assigned to your student to monitor progress, guide he/she through the curriculum, and review assessments.
Students will have one scheduled meeting with their Supervising Teacher a week. The Supervising Teacher also will be available by appointment.
Additionally, content-specific teachers are available for Office Hours and Intervention by appointment on Mondays, 9:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday, 2:45-3:30 p.m.
Blended: For Blended Learning, your student will have two days of in-person, live interaction with three days of live interaction online via Spartan Homeroom.
Apex Learning Option: For students in the Apex Learning instructional model, students will have daily live interaction with their Spartan Homeroom online in addition to a weekly scheduled appointment with their supervising teacher.
Blended: Teachers will teach students through live, in-person teaching as well as asynchronous assigments.
Apex Learning Option: Students will access instruction asynchronously through Apex online curriculum which offers rigorous, University of California a-g approved and accredited content.
Blended: We do not anticipate many changes to student schedules or a change of teachers, unless there are unforseen circumstances.
Apex Learning Option: The Apex Learning Option will involve a change of teachers, given a student will go from six teachers to one supervising teacher. With most students, schedules will changes as well. Several courses do not align directly with courses offered at OAHS. Please review the APEX Course Catalog to see the full list of classes offered. If a course in which your student is currently enrolled is not on the list, an alternate will need to be selected with input from your student's counselor.
Blended: Teachers will continue to assign and account for the 1,200 instructional minutes a week, as they have been since the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.
Apex Learning Option: Although work time for the APEX Learning Option is much more flexible than Blended Learning, in order to learn and complete courses, students will need to work on at least 1,200 minutes of APEX courseware weekly and adhere to our regular daily schedule in order to make progress in classes. This is a requirement from the California Department of Education. It is vitally important for your student to keep pace with assignments and reach out to his/her Supervising Teacher/content teachers for support.
Two ways in which our two instructional options do not differ is in a student's access to counseling, tutoring, clubs, sports and activities. No matter which option you choose for your student, we want to ensure his/her success to the best high school experience possible.
