Physical Education is part of the National Curriculum which means all children are entitled to two hours of Physical Education per week. In Physical Education we have a responsibility to teach all pupils how to independently lead a healthy and active lifestyle. At OSA, learners will build on their skills developed over Key Stage 3 in order to develop their physical competence further and create a passion for physical activity. Learners will experience activities from all areas of the curriculum arranged in units of 8 lessons, with the focus being active participation.
develop the physical literacy of all pupils.
develop competence in a range of sports and physical activities.
develop good levels of physical fitness.
understand how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
Alongside our Physical Activity curriculum we offer GCSE Physical Education, OCR Sport Studies and BTEC Dance.
This is not an examinable course. However, learners will actively develop their skills, fitness and knowledge in a range of different activity areas.
In Key Stage 4, learners continue to study a varied curriculum through a competitive games-based approach. These are as follows:
Football, Rugby, Handball, Rounders, Tennis, Netball, Basketball, Table Tennis and Cricket.
Athletics.
Health-related fitness.
Dance, Gymnastics.
The focus at this level is to promote active participation and build learners' competence, confidence and motivation to pursuit a healthy, active lifestyle. During this stage in our learner's educational career, we also highlight the benefits of physical activity and the positive impact it provides on cognitive skills such as concentration and attention, whilst enhancing classroom attitudes and behaviours. We also value regular exercise and it's role in improving self-confidence, mood and reduction of stress.
Finally, at OSA we have an extensive extra-curricular programme that supports this part of our learner's curriculum and offer plenty of competitive opportunities at district, county and national level.
Physical Education is a core subject and although it is non-examinable it must be followed.
The aims of the PE programme are the total development of each individual within the scope of their own talents and ability. Such aims are both social and physical and involve attributes such as self-reliance and assurance, confidence, reliability, team-working, cooperation, consideration for others, fairness, self-control and the willingness to accept rules, disappointments, defeats and success in the right spirit.
The physical aim is to develop such qualities as strength, stamina, speed, judgement, coordination and other skills in relation to games, outdoor activities and various recreational activities. It emphasises the need for a healthy lifestyle and promotes impact of sport and fitness upon the health and wellbeing of the individual.
All students have gained experience in activities such as gymnastics, athletics, football and netball so that in Key Stage 4 skills can be developed further.
