Within year 9 students will study skills following GCSE
specifications in English Language that will enable
students to read a wide range of texts, fluently and
with good understanding:
read critically, and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing.
write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately.
acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
In addition, GCSE specifications in English Language
will enable students to:
listen to and understand spoken language, and use spoken Standard English effectively.
Spoken language will be reported on as part of the
qualification, but it will not form part of the final mark and grade.
Term 1: Building GCSE skills through a range of units.
Term 2: Building GCSE skills through a range of units.
Term 3: GCSE English Language Paper 1.
Section A: Reading one literature fiction text.
Section B: Writing descriptive or narrative writing.
Section A: Reading one non-fiction text and one literary non fiction text.
Section B: Writing writing to present a viewpoint.
Presenting.
Responding to questions and feedback.
Use of standard English.
English Language is a core subject and must be studied at Key Stage 4.
English Language is central to progression in your life and in your career and it is an essential requirement for all Post 16 courses and in the world of work.
GCSE English Language will allow you to demonstrate the use of English in real life, investigate how language is used and to draw on your own experience. All colleges, universities and employers will require you to communicate clearly and precisely with confidence both verbally and on paper.
