Class Description

Literature focuses on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and literary analysis. Students will learn about literary genres, and they will read and analyze a variety of texts from each – fiction, nonfiction, folklore, poetry, and drama. Furthermore, they will read three novels together as a class:  The Giver by Lois Lowry, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, and S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. Daily homework consists of students reading for 30 minutes each night and completing signpost forms, based on the novels the students are independently reading. There may be projects associated with short stories or books that we are reading as well to help show understanding and meaning.

Required Materials

Class Policies:

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

All students will use their school email to join our ELA Google Classroom at the start of the school year.  Copies of notes and assignments will be posted on Google Classroom so that absent students may have access to them daily. Assignments are due at the beginning of class. Students are expected to check Google Classroom daily.

Students will come into class silently, immediately take out their independent reading book, and begin reading. Please be sure to always have a book to be reading. I have a small library in my classroom that we will go over the proper procedures for borrowing one of those books, but there is also the middle school library.

It is the parents' responsibility to know what your child is reading at home. If they bring a book that is inappropriate to school, I will gently let them know and they can pick a book from my library.

**CHAT GPT of any kind is forbidden in all classes!  If a student is caught using any of the AI sources consequences will be given and they will no longer be able to use their computer for their papers! We want to be sure they are learning the foundations of writing. Thank you for cooperating with us in providing the best learning environment.

GRADING

All grades can be viewed on FACTS. I post grades weekly, so I encourage checking FACTS often to see how your child is performing in class.  The following is a breakdown of how grading works for Literature:

1st and 3rd Quarters: 2nd and 4th Quarters:

Tests/Quizzes 40% Tests/Quizzes   30%

Projects 40% Midterm/Final   30%

Classwork/Homework 20% Projects     20%

Classwork/Homework  20%

ACADEMIC GRADING SCALE

     100 – 93 = A       77 - 73 = C

       92 – 90 = A- 72 - 70 = C-

       89 – 88 = B+ 69 - 68 = D+

       87 – 83 = B 67 - 63 = D

       82 – 80 = B- 62 - 60 = D-

       79 – 78 = C+ 59 - 0 = F

CITIZENSHIP GRADING SCALE

This will be in all academic classes, specials, homeroom (including Mass behavior), and Study Skills.

1

Exceeds expectations, a level 2 plus consistent and active participation; acts as a positive role model to fellow students and consistently exhibits Victory Values

2

Meets expectations, appropriate and Christ-like behavior

3

Needs improvement: frequent redirection, inconsistent behavior, and/or minimal participation

HOMEWORK/LATE POLICY

Late is defined as not being in your possession or turned in when the bell rings. This includes parents dropping off work left at home or retrieving it from your locker. If you are absent, the class work assigned on that day is given the number of school days out to turn in. Homework will be deducted 50% if it is one day late and will not be accepted after one day. Essays and projects are deducted 25% each day they are late. Unless there is an extenuating circumstance or an accommodation plan is in place, assignments and papers will not be accepted when emailed. It is your responsibility to make sure you can print a typed assignment before it is due. You must check Google Classroom for assignments and handouts if you are absent. You are also responsible for promptly submitting your absent assignments to Google Classroom or the bin.  I will work with all extenuating circumstances to implement a plan to catch students up effectively.

I look forward to an amazing year and working with you and your child!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns, but please remember:

***Here in middle school, we encourage self-advocacy and personal responsibility. If there is an inquiry about grades/assignments, students, please communicate with me directly via their school email (olvnorthville.net) or in person at school.
