Class Description and Policies:

The Grammar/Writing curriculum focuses on grammar, writing, speaking and

listening. We will cover parts of speech with nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs,

verbals, adverbs and prepositions. My goal for the students is to build on their

grammar foundation and develop their analytical and writing skills. I want them to

become strong, critical thinkers and confident speakers. I want to take the students

on a research and writing journey that will help prepare them for high school and beyond. Public speaking and listening will be an additional focus, where students will partake in debating current topics, presenting and practicing speaking in front of each other, as well as actively listening to one another. We will be doing daily journaling and bell ringers each day coming into class.

There will be one major paper per quarter and students will be expected to do work and meet deadlines.

Students are required and expected to be checking Google Classroom daily and nightly for any assignments and announcements that could be made after school. Assignments will typically be posted on Google Classroom by the end of the day, so be sure to check in your study skills and at home.

**CHAT GPT of any kind is forbidden in all classes!  If a student is caught using any of the AI sources consequences will be given and they will no longer be able to use their computer for their papers! We want to be sure they are learning the foundations of writing. Thank you for cooperating with us in providing the best learning environment.

Late/Absent Policy Late is defined as not being in your possession or turned in when the bell rings. Homework will be deducted 50% if it is one day late and will not be accepted after one day. Essays and projects are deducted 25% each day they are late. Unless there is an extenuating circumstance or an accommodation plan is in place, assignments and papers will not be accepted when emailed. It is your responsibility to make sure you can print a typed assignment before it is due. You must check Google Classroom for assignments and handouts if you are absent. You are also responsible for promptly submitting your absent assignments to Google Classroom or the bin.  I will work with all extenuating circumstances to implement a plan to catch students up effectively.

Academic Grading

All assignments in G/W are weighted as follows:

All grades can be viewed on FACTS. I post grades weekly, so I encourage checking FACTS often to see how your child is performing in class.  The following is a breakdown of how grading works for Literature:

1st and 3rd Quarters: 2nd and 4th Quarters:

Tests/Quizzes 40% Tests/Quizzes   30%

Projects 40% Midterm/Final   30%

Classwork/Homework 20% Projects   20%

Classwork/Homework 20%

ACADEMIC GRADING SCALE

     100 – 93 = A 77 - 73 = C

             92 – 90 = A-     72 - 70 = C-

                 89 – 88 = B+     69 - 68 = D+

               87 – 83 = B     67 - 63 = D

              82 – 80 = B-     62 - 60 = D-

               79 – 78 = C+     59 - 0 = F

Work must be neat, organized, and follow the criteria given.  Points may be removed for no name, grammar, or spelling mistakes.  It is essential for students always to do their best work and make an effort.  It is essential students turn in assignments on Google Classroom when indicated.

Citizenship Grade

The goal is to guide students to grow spiritually, academically, and socially by inspiring conduct that gives glory to God.  Students will be challenged to make choices that help them grow in virtue and become who God calls them to be.  Treating one another respectfully is an expectation in and out of the classroom. Our class is designed to encourage and promote sharing ideas and asking questions. Students are asked to take an active role in the classroom.  Being present and quiet in class earns a 2.  Being a consistent participant in classroom discussions earns a 1.

This will be in all academic classes, specials, homeroom (including Mass behavior), and Study Skills.

1

Exceeds expectations, a level 2 plus consistent and active participation; acts as a positive role model to fellow students and consistently exhibits Victory Values

2

Meets expectations, appropriate and Christ-like behavior

3

Needs improvement: frequent redirection, inconsistent behavior, and/or minimal participation

***Here in middle school, we encourage self-advocacy and personal responsibility. If there is an inquiry about grades/assignments, students, please communicate with me directly via their school email (olvnorthville.net) or in person at school.

I look forward to an amazing year!
