Labour Market Information (LMI) helps students understand the world of work, what jobs exist, which sectors are growing, what skills are needed, and where opportunities lie, both locally in Manchester and across the UK.
At our school, we ensure that all students have access to meaningful and up-to-date LMI throughout their time with us. It’s more than just facts and figures, it’s about bringing careers to life and helping pupils make informed choices about their futures. Here’s how we do it:
Assemblies: We regularly welcome guest speakers from a wide range of industries to deliver assemblies, giving students direct insight into the skills and opportunities available in the Manchester job market and beyond.
Subject-Specific LMI: LMI is embedded across the curriculum in engaging and relevant ways. For example:
In Science, students explore careers in space and aerospace during themed events like Space Week.
In Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), pupils take part in online talks that link language learning to global careers — including sessions such as “Football Lingo” with professionals from international sports backgrounds.
In Computing, Maths, and Science, students meet real STEM professionals through live online chats and Q&A sessions, hearing first-hand about careers in tech, engineering, and research.
Other subjects regularly highlight how their content connects to real-world jobs, ensuring every student can see the value of what they’re learning.
Job of the Week: Every week during form time, students are introduced to a different career via the form PowerPoint. These snapshots include details like job roles, required qualifications, salary ranges, and the demand for these jobs in Greater Manchester.
Career Ambassador Mornings: Once a half term, we host informal breakfast sessions where a guest from a different profession meets with students to talk about their career journey. These inspiring talks allow students to ask questions in a relaxed environment, and highlights are shared with all pupils through the form PowerPoint.
Options Process Support: When choosing GCSE or post-16 subjects, students are provided with clear information about the careers linked to each subject. This helps them make decisions based on both their interests and real employment opportunities.
Work Experience: Our work experience programme connects students with local employers, helping them gain practical experience and a better understanding of the workplace and career expectations.
By embedding LMI into everyday school life through subjects, assemblies, events, and personal interactions we help our students understand the changing world of work and the exciting opportunities available to them, right here in Manchester and across the globe.
