The purpose of this response is to give you the opportunity to explore at least two possible writing-related topics for the series of assignments you will be doing throughout the course of the semester.
Drawing upon both Response #1: Introduce Yourself and your conference with the instructor, as well as keeping in mind the requirements for Assignment #3: The IMRAD Essay, you will write a 300-500 word proposal in which you explore two possible topics for the writing-related research that you will be doing this semester. Remember that the topic must be related to writing or literacy. For each proposed topic you will want to compose cohesive paragraphs that explain...
- the research questions that you would ask for each topic. These are not survey questions or interview questions; these are the broad questions that you want to answer by conducting the research. For example, what benefits do individuals with bi-polar disorder perceive that they get from journalling? or How do accountants use alphabetic writing to explain the complex mathematics that they communicate to their clients? The overall project that you will be working on for the semester is designed to give you time to answer these type of questions.
- your personal interest in the topic and how you will benefit personally and/or professionally from doing this research
- how easy you think the topic will be research, both in terms of finding textual sources and for conducting primary research. You will make a better argument to the instructor about the viability of a topic if you include some textual sources that you have already found about the proposed topic
- your preliminary ideas for conducting primary research; see Assignment #2: Research Proposal for a sense of what primary research is.
