When technology acts as a direct substitute with no functional improvement. At this level technology is directly substituted for a more traditional tool or method.

Thinking of it in terms of your morning coffee. When you substitute your coffee from home with a Starbucks coffee. Nothing changes. You have traded a cup of coffee for a cup of coffee.

Using a web-based version of a document instead of a hard copy.
Asking students to type an essay rather than hand-write it.
Using PowerPoint or Google Slides to present information to the class.
Convert information you share on the walls of your classroom into a digital format that can be accessed anywhere at any time. This could include your schedule, word wall, vocabulary lists, etc.
Consider recording your classes or creating instruction videos and providing a recording for students who are absent or unable to attend. These videos can also be great for students to refer back to and take the information in at a pace that works best for them.
