With all of the information that is stored within Google Classroom, it can start to get cluttered and hard to find all of the necessary information that students need right now. One way to help manage all of the information stored within Google Classroom is to create a topic designated just for the previous marking period. This will ensure that all students have access to any of the prior information they may need, while not having it mixed in with your current material. It is best to have this topic located at the bottom of your Google Classroom as well to help avoid any confusion between old and new material.
Adding emojis to your topic names or assignments will help to make assignments or topics stick out for easy access. For our littlest learners this will also help to locate assignments if they are unable to read the text provided. Emojis can also be used to differentiate assignments that are posted. They can help students understand which assignments are past due and no longer being graded, which ones are late but still being graded, and which ones have been posted that week. This will help students to see visually what it is they need to complete for each class.
Limit assignments to being only posted on your Classwork page. If possible leave the Stream for only important announcements. By filling your Stream with assignments, students are more likely to miss important announcements that may be mixed in.
To adjust your stream settings click on the gear icon located in the upper right hand corner of your Google Classroom. Scroll down until you see the "General" topic. Under general you will see the word "stream." Next to stream you have the option to "show attachments and details," "show condensed notifications," or "hide notifications." By choosing "hide notifications" classwork will not appear on your classroom Stream. Please know this setting will need to be set for each individual classroom you have created.
Grouping assignments into weeks will help to make it easy for students to find what they are looking for. This format will also ensure both the students and the teacher is aware of when the assignment is created.
