“Don’t just teach a lesson. Create an EXPERIENCE.” That line from Teach Like a PIRATE by Dave Burgess deeply resonates with me. I truly believe when we create an experience and not just teach a lesson that students remember it longer, and are much more engaged in their learning. Renee Gleason and Dona Fiedler have done just that in their Spanish 4 classroom. Students took a “walking tour” using Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Slides to research and devise a presentation on the various historical influences on one Spanish city and how those influences can still be in seen in that city today. With the use of Google Earth students were able to visit inside monuments and take screenshots that resembled them actually bing in the city.

The project began with a brief tutorial on Google Earth, where the class explored the city of Barcelona looking for influences still found today. From there students selected their own city to explore. Two days of class time was dedicated to exploration while concurrently researching facts and the different influences found within their chosen city.

The next stage in this project was for students to showcase their city and the learning they gained through their exploration. This showcase took place in two pieces. The first piece asked students to showcase their learning on a Google slide deck in which students shared their learning and experience with peers.

In addition to a Google slide deck students also created a personalized map using Google My Maps. Pin points were placed to identify three landmarks students found while exploring through Google Earth. Within those pinned locations students included screenshots taken during their exploration as well as a description of the landmark and its historical importance.

Both students and teachers agree this type of learning was engaging and fun for all. Students were enticed by the feeling as though they were in the city taking pictures and sharing their “trip” with others. While Gleason and Fiedler were thrilled with how excited students were and how they took ownership of their learning.

This is a wonderful example of how we can blend technology with instruction that is already taking place. It can make for a truly enjoyable experience for all involved, while teaching those real-life skills students will need to be successful long after graduation. Through the use of Google Sites students can showcase learning in new and innovative ways. Google Sites is a great resource for publishing a class project or even having an online portfolio to showcase student learning.
