Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
The AP Program gives the opportunity to:
May receive college credit for scores of 3, 4, or 5 on AP exams.
Participate in college-level academic rigor while still under the guidance of supportive high school staff.
Have the opportunity to thrive in a challenging environment with very challenging curricula.
Compare their abilities in a variety of discipline areas with other students their age in the nation and the world.
Assess their skills in a variety of discipline areas to better prepare for their futures.
What is the Oak Creek Philosophy in regard to Advanced Placement?
It is beneficial for students to enroll in classes that have a rigorous curriculum such as Advanced Placement classes. Exposure to challenging coursework helps students excel in all coursework in high school and in their life beyond secondary school. For that reason, Oak Creek tries to maintain practices that allow many students to take at least one AP course during their high school career.
All students at Oak Creek High School who enroll in AP classes may take the national exam in May. Students taking the test are required to pay an AP Exam fee, set by the College Board, by the end of the first semester. The College Board has initiated an AP Fee Reduction Policy for qualifying students.
Student Expectations for AP Classes:
AP Classes are weighted regardless of whether the student takes the AP Exam in May.
Curriculum for AP Classes is set by the College Board and is a national curriculum.
Students taking AP courses may have summer assignments to complete as a requirement for the course.
Students who sign up to take AP Courses may only drop out of an AP course as an ability level change (see chart below).
Students are encouraged to make schedule changes for AP courses PRIOR to the school year beginning.
