Intent
At OPA, we believe that every child is entitled to receive a creative, broad and balanced Physical Education. We deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities to enable every individual to fulfil their own personal potential in a safe and supportive environment. We deliver a PE curriculum that is bespoke to not only the individual’s requirements but blended with the classroom environment which makes learning exciting, effective and inclusive to all. Through our curriculum, we want to improve a healthy and balanced lifestyle so the children understand the importance of the long term benefits.
Implementation
OPA provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including dance, gymnastics, invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, swimming and outdoor and adventure. We follow a curriculum map and scheme of work which is a live document and can be adapted throughout the year as appropriate to link in with the Central Ideas in the classroom. As an IB PYP school, all children are encouraged to become independent learners with agency, using their Learner Profile Attributes and Approaches to Learning.
Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week covering the chosen unit of work. All pupils are invited to participate in intra and inter school competitions within The Trust and the local area which is an inclusive approach to develop teamwork and leadership skills, mental and social skills as well as physical. It also gives all children the opportunity to experience the success of competitive sports. Sports day ensures that all pupils have the opportunity to apply their skills and work collaboratively across year groups. In KS2, Play Leaders support break and lunchtime transferring skills learnt in lessons. Swimming and Water Rescue lessons are compulsory for all KS2 pupils for three terms every year.
Impact
The way pupils showcase, share, celebrate and demonstrate their work shows the impact of our curriculum. They develop a love of physical activity and are motivated to participate in a variety of sport out of school and take responsibility for their own health and fitness. By participating in high quality and engaging lessons, our pupils learn to become confident, responsible and balanced young adults who we hope leave here with a solid foundation for becoming active and healthy individuals in their future learning and into adulthood.
