Intent
The intent of mathematics at Oaks is to design a curriculum, which is accessible to all and will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement. We deliver lessons that are creative and engaging, linked to their transdisciplinary theme where possible. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We intend for our pupils to be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects related to their central idea.
Implementation
We continually strive to build upon the excellent understanding of the expectations of the curriculum that our staff have. We achieve this through regular quality CPD which is provided through the subject leader and SLT. At Oaks, our children are taught mathematical skills daily and are immersed in reasoning throughout a lesson, allowing all children the opportunity to reason with their understanding. Children are taught through targeted differentiated small groups and mixed ability whole class lessons. Where possible, links are made between subjects in relation to their transdisciplinary themes. Topics are revised in a range of ways to ensure skills are embedded.
Impact
Our maths curriculum allows children to understand the relevance and importance of what they are learning in relation to real world concepts. Children know that maths is a vital life skill that they will rely on in many areas of their daily life. Children have a positive view of maths due to learning in an environment where maths is promoted as being an exciting and enjoyable subject in which they can investigate and ask questions. Our children are confident who can all talk about Maths and their learning and the links between Mathematical topics.
