Intent
Children will leave Oaks Primary Academy with an appreciation and curiosity in History formed through engaging learning experiences. We will support children to see that learning in History is an on-going process not a one-off event. Children will meet the National Curriculum expectations in History, which will be taught by highly-qualified, enthusiastic staff who will support children to develop their historical skills, knowledge and understanding Though the class PYP transdisciplinary themes, opportunities will be designed for children of all ages to experience learning beyond the classroom environment, whether in person or virtually utilising our access to 1:1 devices. In tandem with this approach, cultural capital opportunities will allow learners to enrich their knowledge; for example, visiting places they may not normally consider such as castles, museums or places of historical interest. Children will develop a deep understanding of the theme they are studying. They will use their prior knowledge and conceptual understanding to make relevant connections between ideas, concepts and how our British values relate to history. Research skills will be developed; children will be able to use and evaluate a variety of sources to consider historical information and to develop a range and depth of historical knowledge and chronological understanding. Oaks pupils develop a real understanding and appreciation of the world. Links to careers will be made and provided for where possible: for example, museum curators, college and university professors and historical researchers.
Implementation
History at Oaks is taught throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills and have mapped these in relation to their transdisciplinary theme, ensuring that knowledge builds progressively and that children develop skills systematically. At the end of each topic, knowledge is reviewed using the Foundation Subject Assessment Tracker, allowing teachers to stretch and challenge, or review certain topics with individual students.
Impact
As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding an appreciation of their local history and periods of time throughout human civilisation. Our pupils use their skills gained through History to understand the ever-changing world they live in and apply their knowledge to other curriculum subjects.
