Each morning for Art Week, there was an Artist of the Day - which classes learned about and could then draw in the style of that person.
As well as having workshops, and art activities organised for breaks and lunches, class teachers looked at their current Central Idea to see how art could be interwoven into that area, so pupils could create something in the context of their inquiry.
As you can see in the class links with inquiry image above, teachers have listed their 'Transdisciplinary theme' which they are focusing on, and then what their central idea is. The main statament that learning links to throughout that unit of inquiry. You can also see the breadth of learning through these central ideas and lines of inquiry, showing pupils' exposure to communities, legacies from people in the past, geography, government etc. All areas of learning that broaden pupils' horizens and understanding of our global world.
In the right hand column, staff have then made very relevant links to their inquiries with what their art focus could be.
The slides below show the Art Week assembly, as well as the slides for the Artist of the Day, ensuring a diverse representation for our pupils.
We regularly keep our link school notified about what we are doing at our school: if it is just everyday learning, or if we are holding special events, like our Art Week.
We are so fortunate that we have Whatsapp as this is how we engage mostly with our link school, sharing photos, videos and work.
In the photos below, you will see examples of art work received from pupils in Malawi, things that they love to draw, posters they made for us to raise awareness for our Eco Club (many overlapping links and themes here!) and also beautiful handcrafted wooden gifts which they have sent to us via the founder of Starfish Malawi on his annual visits. We received these gifts in September and June of this academic year.
As a school, we have been able to send our link school paper materials and writing and colouring pencils to ensure their pupils can access their learning at school.
Ensuring these pupils have resources needed to access their education supports our school's focus on the Sustainable Development Goals and playing our small part in Goal 4, Quality Education.
As you can also see from the posters shared by Sele School with us, we have had a joint focus on Water, SDG 6 for Clean Water and Sanitation. You can see in the images below that we also sent water bottles to the school to ensure that children would be able to carry around their drinking water - they have a pump at school.
