Miss Bray
The end of half term seems to come around so quickly! It's certainly been another busy one with lots of exciting learning opportunities both in the classroom and during OWL where the children have been collecting their skills awards.
Year 6 have completed their SATS after lots of extra revision sessions which took place during lunchtimes. A big thank you to Mr Cooke for working through his breaks to ensure the children were as prepared as could be.
Sadly, we said an unexpected goodbye to Mrs Muir on the last day of term. She is taking some time for self study as she prepares to use her previous teaching experience in Singapore to embark on a teaching career in England. We are extremely grateful for everything she has done to support the children in Y6 as well as those from other year groups who took part in interventions with her. We wish her every success for the future.
There was a very small gathering this time - the timing of the meeting may have impacted on numbers able to attend. Discussions centred around the timing of the information sent to Y1 parents regarding Mrs Turner leaving and how this may have impacted on the 'Oakfield' family feel. Parents are keen to know about staffing for next year - teachers have until May 31 to resign from their post and therefore final decisions about where teachers are placed are not made until after the half term break.
Parents attended the PSHE Parent Workshop regarding Alright Charlie. This is an important piece of safeguarding work which aims to highlight the warning signs of grooming in an age appropriate way. Children in Year 5 and 6 also took part in activities supported by their class teachers.
We held our very first Neurodivergent workshop for parents which was delivered by our link Educational Psychologist Emma Gibbs. There was a focus on ADHD and Autism. We felt that this was an important event to hold to support parents whether a diagnosis is in place or not.
Families enjoyed tasting some meals from the new menu. There was shepherds pie, macaroni cheese and chicken meatballs with pasta to name a few.
Mrs Tomat and Oliver officially introduced Hershey to all of the children through a number of small assemblies. They found out about her training, what she likes to do when she isn't working and how she supports Oliver.
A team of 4 year 5 children represented Oakfield in the live area heats of a national maths championship! It’s the first time we’ve ever taken part in a competition like this and we were up against over 100 other schools! While we didn’t win this time, we are excited to enter future competitions and continue to be amazing mathematicians!
PTA updates
The PTA enjoyed a really successful Spring Term with regards to events and money raised. The gift room for Mother's Day proved to be as popular as ever and there was lots of positive feedback from the disco.
Freezepop Fridays will continue until the end of term - hopefully we will have some sunny weather to enjoy them with! Money is currently being raised to go towards some new, more durable benches as our wooden ones are rotting away and many are now unusable.
Do you fancy getting involved in the PTA fun?
As well as the main roles, we have a group of volunteers who offer time as and when they can. If you would like to be part of the 'no pressure' Whatsapp group then let Helen or Emma know. There will be a PTA social Thursday 13th June from 7:30pm at The Testwood. This will be an opportunity for us to get to know volunteers and chat informally about PTA events and ideas over a glass of wine or two.
This week Year 1 held a Grandparents Tea Party and Year 2 were learning about Jumu’ah - Friday Prayers.
It was lovely to finally have a sunny week at OWL for Bat Week. There has been quizzes, games and crafts as well as den making, climbing and creating dishes in the mud kitchen!
Year R made their own windchimes at OWL this week and Year 2 learnt about invertebrates in class. New topics were started with Year 1 learning about plants and Year 3 starting ‘Emperors and Empires’. Our Boom Reader winners for the highest amount of reading this week were … Year 1! We finish the week shortly with Celebration Assembly.
Thank you to everyone who came to our food taster session on Monday. Hopefully it helped you get an idea of the lovely food we serve in school.
This week Year 5 took park in a Greek workshop, Year 1 traced around their hands to make animal characters and Year R had fun outside in the dry weather!
Year 3 made robots out of shapes and Year 4 learnt about early Sumer and its development.
It’s been so lovely to have some sunshine this week! The children have loved being able to play on the field at lunchtimes and lots of fun has been had at OWL.
In writing Year 1 made their own journey sticks and then shared imaginary stories about the adventures they had been on. Year 5 continued learning about strengthening structures and comparing shapes in DT.
In Art, Year 2 have been exploring portraits of famous monarchs and Year 6 have been exploring abstraction through a range of different forms: line, shape and colour.
We will be finishing the week shortly with Celebration Assembly. Our Boom Reader winners for the highest amount of reading this week are … Year 1 … again! Tonight is the Year 2/3 Sleepover in the hall.
And finally - Good luck to Year 6 for their SATs next week! We know you’ll all do your best.
Year 6 have done brilliantly this week sitting their SATs. The children enjoyed coming in for breakfast every day – and particularly enjoyed their celebratory breakfast today! Well done Year 6!
On Monday we held our Science Fair. It was lovely to see so many children sharing their experiments and findings.
In History this week Year 1 have been learning about Victorian schools, Year 2 have been learning about William the Conqueror and Year 5 created slideshows about Ancient Greece. As part of their topic 'Long Ago' Year R made their faces out of clay.
Next Friday is Express Afternoon (see Dojo event for details). We then break up for half term.
This week Year R had visits from two grandparents who talked to them about long ago. Year 2 learnt about animals and their offspring and also spent time designing then sewing bag tags.
The theme at OWL was Bees. Year 3 had fun making little bees from pine cones and wool or colouring and cutting bees from card to hang on sticks and fly around looking for pollen. The class talked about how bees do a waggle dance to tell other bees where to go for the best nectar!
We also welcomed the parents of our new Year R children to meet the team.
We will end the half term shortly with Gold Frame Assembly followed by Express Afternoon.
YR have been finding out about the past. They had two visits from grandparents who talked about how life was like when they were little. They were shown black and white photos of family and transport. The children loved seeing the old bear and giving it a cuddle and learning about how children kept warm in their classroom without the use of central heating… a fire ! There was also a discussion about how different televisions were, how Sundays were a day of rest and how different school uniforms and holidays are now. In maths they have been consolidating adding and subtracting using different resources. There has also been some amazing team work building an obstacle course. The children were very excited to have their first baby frog wich they named Preston!
Y1 enjoyed learning about plants and played ‘I Spy’ around the school to see what they could find. In maths, they learned about capacity and volume. They explored different containers and did some predicting about which would have the greatest capacity. Lots of good discussions were had about the shape and sizes of containers and how this impacted on their capacity. A wonderful l afternoon was had learning how to layer paper and card to make 3D techniques in the style of James Rizzi. The children also learned about Victorian schools and all the artefacts you would find there.
Y2 have been learning about Kings and Queens. They found out the story of how William the Conqueror conquered England in 1066. They learned about the story form The Bayeux Tapestry which was made in the 11th Century. They then made their own Bayeux Tapestry. The children also learned about Alfred the Great and ordered the significant events in his life. In DT, they designed and sewed bag tags. After choosing their fabric they used a running stitch to join the fabric together. It was very tricky but they were very resilient! In Maths they having been learning to tell the time practicing quarter past and quarter to. In Science they have been learning all about animals and their offspring. They matched the adult animals with their offspring and then sorted them into the 6 animals groups.
Y3 have been finding out about emperors and empires. They worked in groups to sort out events in Roman history before discussing the most significant emperor of Rome. In DT, they designed and made mini greenhouses that will be taken down to OWL next term. The children all worked well in their groups and produced great greenhouses. The children have also been busy making Botanical Weaves. After setting up the frames they went looking for different plants that they could use from the school grounds. The children learned that the frame had been set up with the 'warp' (vertical) while they were completing the 'weft'.
Y4 have begun learning about ancient civilisations finding out about early Sumer, site of the earliest known civilisation, and its development. They made group posters with a timeline of the development from nomads to large cities. In PE there has been lots of work on balance with the children transferring a cone from one side of their body to the other. They also worked in pairs to create a sequence while still keeping their balance. In OWL there was a quiz with the questions hidden around the woods. A game was also played that demonstrates how bats use echolocation to hunt for food at night.
Y5 have been doing some cross curricular learning using Google Sheets in Maths to create a table. They entered a formula into a cell so it would calculate the total of the input data! They have also use Google Slides in history to create a slideshow about Ancient Greece. In DT, they have been learning about strengthening structures and comparing shapes. Using straws and wool they created a triangle and a square, noticing that the triangle was a more stable shape. The children showed real perseverance as threading the wool into the straws required ingenuity and patience! Some children also started reinforcing the corners of their squares to make them stronger. In Art they explored ‘fabric crumb’ as a way of using scraps of material to create a new piece of material or image. They carefully chose colours and shapes of fabric to create their piece. There has also been lots of singing this half term with the children learning to sing in rounds and harmonise.
Y6 worked hard in the lead up to SATs. They approached the week with a calm resilience and enjoyed a well deserved treat at the end of the week. During PSHE they worked with Year 5 through the ‘Alright Charlie’ session. They thought carefully about the questions and scenarios and responded maturely and with sensitivity. In art, Year 6 have been exploring abstraction through a range of different forms: line, shape and colour. This culminated in analysing the abstract image of Guernica by Pablo Picasso, portraying the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. The class then attempted to recreate a zoomed in section of the image to create their own class version of Guernica. They also enjoyed learning about Orphism. This was an abstract painting style influenced by Cubism and developed by Robert and Sonia Delaunay. First they created a zoomed in section of a painting before using the style in their own creation.
What a successful Science Fair! It was lovely to see so many children sharing their experiments and findings. We also had videos sent in from experiments carried out at home. The enthusiasm for science was wonderful to see.
