Miss Bray
What another busy half term! There has been so much happening in classrooms from visitors coming in to teachers planning exciting lessons to launch new topics. As I walk around school, children are excited to learn and keen to share what is happening in their lessons. Our continued focus on handwriting has seen a growing number of children moving from supported lines. It has also been pleasing to see children taking ownership of this and wanting to improve for themselves.
As is often the case in January, there has been quite a bit of illness in school both with the children and adults. Staff have been amazing at stepping in and providing cover, often at short notice, to ensure that breaks and lunchtimes have enough staff. For teachers, this is a big ask as they have limited time to set up their afternoon lessons and have something to eat!
It has been a quiet half term for our Junior Leadership Team. School Council have collected suggestions from their classes for what they would like to have in school as the PTA have some money to spend. There were lots of good suggestions - a new climbing frame was popular along with equipment for Podcasting, basketball hoops and a quiet room for playtimes.
Our librarians were fantastic helpers during National Storytelling week. The library was open at lunchtimes for children to write their own stories and some of our librarians ran this event for Mrs Light-Rowsell.
It was lovely to see so many of you attend the Headteacher tea and chat. There were lots of great questions and ideas for moving forward.
Question - What is the status of before and after school club?
We are still hoping to employ our own staff to offer childcare, interviews are planned for next half term. There is also a possibility that we can apply for a government grant along with New Forest Childcare so that they can come back to our site.
Question - Why is this not a Gateway meeting anymore?
There isn't anything to update you with at present, there will be more information next half term. Mr Mitton will offer an online meeting - more information will follow in the new term.
Question - When will we find out about the Year 1 teacher?
We have been through the recruitment process and will be ready to announce to the children and parents after half term. It is important that all the children find out from us with a clear plan for transition as we know that this will be another tricky time for them.
Question - If Mrs Price is moving to Y1, does that mean that Y3 won't have an assistant teacher?
We always look at the needs of the children across the school and will move assistant teachers if and when necessary. We are mindful that there are some children in Y3 who will need to continue to have support and intervention.
Question - Lots of children have been leaving, is there something we can do to attract children at Y3 and does this have a financial impact?
We have had parents look around for Y3 places during our YR open events in the past, however, we could make it more obvious when we have Y3 spaces. Mr Mitton has designed a leaflet for us to put in local estate agents, doctor surgeries etc... to ensure that people know about the school when moving to the area.
Children have left us for a range of reasons, two families have moved out of the area which is beyond our control and one hasn't lived in our catchment so the move will make it easier to be at school on time. As a one form entry school, we are not able to place children in different classes e.g. separate twins, or when parents don't want their child to be in class with another child. We have had one new starter this year, are due to have another after half term and there is interest from another family. At the moment, it is too easy for parents to move their children when their child says they want to go to a different school. We would urge you to come and talk to us first if there is a problem so that we can work together to resolve it.
Question - How can we get our name out in the wider community?
We have previously taken part in Totton Carnival which the PTA would be keen to do again, however, it relies on parents being able to get involved and support the event. The PTA also have plans for some new community events during the summer term. As a school, this is something we are keen on expanding, we started by inviting residents of Sylvia Crescent to our Macmillan coffee afternoon.
As suggested, we can look at what can be shared wider on the Totton Facebook page.
Question - Does parents evening have to take place in the hall?
Some of you expressed that it can be uncomfortable with lots of other parents in the room. We have already arranged our next set of appointments for during the day. This is becoming increasingly difficult for us to cover and therefore next academic year we will go back to two evenings and hold them in the classrooms.
PTA updates
The PTA have started using a new app called Classlist which should make buying tickets for events far easier going forward.
Benefits:
- Details are stored for quick ticket buying
- Payments can be made through Apple Pay or Google Pay
- All tickets, event info etc is stored in one app
This has already been well received for the SPRING DISCO and MOTHER’S DAY GIFT ROOM.
City of Southampton Orchestra
Mrs Cooper organised a Saturday trip to see the City of Southampton Orchestra. It was a brilliant show which told the story of Peter and the Wolf through music. We all had a brilliant time and especially enjoyed seeing Mrs Houghton play.
Clubs
There are lots of clubs on offer next half term. Staff run clubs begin the second week back. These include choir, book craft, board games, coding, gardening and more!
It was lovely to welcome the children back after the Christmas break! We hope you all had a fun couple of weeks.
This week Year 3 have been learning about Lent and trying pancakes. Year 2 have been making menorahs as part of their RE learning.
Various trips are currently being planned for this term – keep an eye on Dojo for further information.
OWL sessions started this week and there was great fun outside, despite the cold weather! Year R had their first OWL sessions too and loved exploring the outside area.
Indoors, Year 3 made space creatures and Year 2 had a visitor from Southampton Art Gallery.
Year R have been reading ‘The Three Little Pigs’. They built houses and the Big Bad Wolf came to blow their houses down!
We are finishing the week shortly with the first Celebration Assembly of 2024.
This week Year 6 had a trip to the Sea City Museum and Year 3 learnt about forces. There has been lots more fun at OWL with many children making ice art or cooking over the fire.
This week Year 4 used different techniques in Art to show atmospheric perspective and Year 3 spent time soil testing in OWL. Year 5 were amazing scientists, learning about sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and Year 2 learnt about what plants needed to grow.
We finish the week with Celebration Assembly shortly.
There has been lots of lovely art learning this week. Year 1 have been busy creating collagraphs and printing using ink, Year 4 looked at how to create both warm and cool landscapes and Year 5 explored different shading techniques using pen, pencil, ink and chalk.
Year 2 were geographers looking at the similarities and differences between Whitby and Bournemouth.
We break up next Friday for half term. In the afternoon we have Headteacher Tea & Chat and Express Afternoon (see Dojo events for info on both).
What a busy week! Year 2 went to Hilliers Gardens and Year 1 had a visitor from Beaulieu Motor Museum. Year 5 went to watch Testwood’s performance of ‘Matilda’, they had a trip to Asda in Totton and spent this morning cooking – phew! Year R have been learning about length and height in maths and Year 4 finished their landscape art.
This afternoon we have Headteacher’s Tea & Chat, followed by Express (see Dojo events for details of both).
YR had an exciting start to the half term building houses like the ‘Three Little Pigs’. They have enjoyed some very muddy OWL sessions digging for worms. During their Chinese New Year celebrations, they cooked noodles and tried different sauces. They also challenged themselves to eat the noodles with chopsticks which is not as easy as it looks! There have also been some visitors to YR this half term which included Shelley the turtle!
Y1 had a tricky Maths challenge where they had to arrange triangles to make one big triangle so the numbers that touch add up to 10. They had to use trial and error as there was a very specific way of completing it. In Art, the children have been busy creating collagraphs and printing using ink. Building up to this, they used different textured materials to make their collagraphs thinking about their previous learning around lines, shapes and textures to create an image that could be printed on paper. In Computing, pictograms were made using an app called PicCollage. The children worked in groups and showed great resilience and computing skills. During OWL sessions Mrs Isaac has been impressed with how the children can describe different birds and the children have enjoyed using the zip line, mud slides, mud kitchen, bug hunting, tree climbing and den making!
Y2 have been exploring stance in PE and how this can help us to balance. They worked in groups to create balance sequences on benches. As geographers, they looked at the similarities and differences between Whitby and Bournemouth. They had keen eyes and were able to spot human and physical features and record them in their books. In Maths they had great fun learning about money and how to make different amounts using different coins. OWL sessions have been focused on bird watching. Bird feeders were made to encourage lots of different birds to visit Oakfield during the RSPB schools bird watch. They have also had fun in small groups climbing, making dens, bug hunting and in the mud kitchen.
Y3 have been finding out about rocks and fossils. They have made sketches of ammonites and turned them into some wonderful prints. They have used a sorting chart to group different rocks and thought about their properties. A very important meeting was 'attended' at Lyme Regis Council to discuss a proposal for building a statue to honour Mary Anning. The people at the meeting had very clear reasons why Mary Anning is an important person and why she should be remembered. During OWL sessions, various tools have been used to make vehicles, first sawing to make the block, then loppers to make wheels and hammers to attach them.
Y4 have shown great resilience and collaboration in their P.E lessons on balancing and jumping. They have worked together to create a sequence of movements, which is much harder than it looks! The children have also been great artists this half term. They have looked at how to create both warm and cool landscapes using their understanding of the colour wheel and how the colours compliment each other. Different techniques have been used to show atmospheric perspective and with stronger colours being used in the foreground and faded in the background. There have been some fantastic examples in their sketchbooks.
Y5 been focusing on food this half term! They have learnt how to use 6 figure grid references to locate farms in our local area. Did you know that the topography of our land is ideal for mixed farming? They have cleared the raised beds in the allotment area chosing a variety of frutit and vegetables they would like to grow. After an exciting visit to Asda, Mr Durrant and Mrs Sinclair helped the children with peeling, chopping and cooking a range of vegetables into four tasty dishes. In Art, the children have explored different shading techniques using pen, pencil, ink and chalk. They also looked at work by Rembrandt and discussed the way light and dark is used for effect!
Y6 have been busy in class learning about the Titanic and electrical circuits. During OWL sessions they have learnt how to make kindling, collecting wood and using the flint and steels to light the campfire. They have all whittled a stick to wrap bread dough around. Their damper bread was cooked over the hot embers and enjoyed with a cup of hot chocolate. Tasty pancakes have also been cooked!
The week beginning Monday 29, January was National Storytelling week. In school, the library was open every lunchtime for children to read, write, retell and act out stories. At home there were opportunities for you to draw/write/ sing/ tell /act a story based on the picture/video stimulus shared. A writing competition was also launched for all children to take part in. The theme is 'thinking up your own world' - can you write a story, poem or play, set in your own, imaginary world? There is still time to enter with the deadline being Friday, 23 February. The winners will be announced on Friday 1, March!
