Miss Bray
I hope you have had a restful Easter weekend. It has been another busy half term in school with so many events and enrichment activities which are mentioned below.
Sadly we say goodbye to Mrs Turner who will be starting her new role in a different school outside our Academy Trust. She has been a part of our school community since the start of her teaching career, providing continued support to the school
and children, even navigating through the challenges of a pandemic. I know you will join me in offering her our positive
thoughts for the future and wish her well in her career.
We have some exciting developments taking place over the Easter break. The KS2 area will look a little different as we are making a small room at the end of the space which will have a dedicated 'green screen' space for filming during computing lessons. There will be a new path installed leading up to and around the pond so that the children can access the area safely and will notice some new signs around the site to reflect 'Oakfield Academy'.
The School Council have been busy this half term collecting the views of the children across school.
When we previously asked the children what changes they would like to see, several classes fed back that they would like a quiet space at lunchtimes. We discussed where these spaces might be and then the council went back to their classes to ask the children what activities they would like to have. There were lots of great ideas including nice music, drawing, beanbags, reading, colouring, Lego, teddies and napping!!!
After our Mother's Day breakfast we decided to leave the tables as they were for the children's lunch. This seemed to bring about a quieter, calmer atmosphere in the hall at lunchtimes. All the children were able to vote on whether to leave the tables small or put them back together to form longer tables. 5 out of 7 classes voted to keep them smaller.
Our School Ambassadors led our Holi celebration (thank you to James for stepping in) and our Easter service.
In our recent meeting with families, we explored several key topics in our school community.
Firstly, we discussed staff movements within the school, which are strategic decisions aimed at providing a positive school experience. Following Mrs Turner's departure at Easter, Mrs Roué will transition to Year 1, ensuring continuity for our pupils. Our new teacher, Mr Skeels will join us in Year 3. We explored and explained in detail the reasons for this decision and we discussed the impact of this more widely.
We acknowledged the request from families for communication regarding the school's approach to supporting individual children with their behaviour. Families explained that they wanted to help children understand that positive behaviour strategies and support (such as when children have intervention sessions with adults) are there to support children not as a 'reward'. We aim to clarify this to prevent any misconceptions about rewards for behaviour going forward.
The discussion also touched upon our behaviour policy and some families present wanted to know why some behaviour displayed by children was not suspendable. We explained that it can feel frustrating not to know the consequences other children receive in response to behaviour but we do not share this information with other families to protect privacy. While we appreciate all families' views on behaviour (which can often be at opposing ends when it comes to suspending pupils who make poor behaviour choices) our focus remains on balancing discipline with support, teaching pupils appropriate behaviour alongside any necessary consequences.
Finally, the introduction of a new menu was discussed, with Miss Bray proposing a tasting session. Families expressed a keen interest in rejoining Year R pupils for lunch, a tradition fondly remembered.
Mr Mitton
Thank you to those who attended the Headteacher tea and chat. There were a couple of things from me and then a chance for parents to raise their concerns/give feedback and ideas for improvements.
New Forest Childcare
We met with New Forest Childcare to discuss the possibility of them being back on site from September. They are looking to apply for a Government grant to be able to recruit a new member of staff. I passed on previous parental feedback where some parents were requesting the ability to book for just 1 hour after school. This is not something that they can offer as it doesn't work for their business model. They were keen to know what parents are looking for from the club should they return and we discussed the possibility of there being different clubs run on different evenings e.g. if your child was with them on a Monday after school there would be cookery club, Tuesday might be gardening club etc..
If you have any ideas that you would like me to pass on to them, please do let me know.
Newsletter
I asked for some feedback on the newsletter - is it read? Is it useful? Is it too long/is there anything that you feel you don't need? Parents liked to see what has been happening across school and particularly what is coming ahead. We talked about not including the weekly information that comes from the Dojo posts as parents tend to scroll past this.
As a school, we are planning to introduce some pupil voice into the newsletter also.
Issues/concerns raised
Could we meet the new teacher prior to children being in thier class in September, although we know the faces of teachers it would be nice to be able to say to our children that we have also met them. We will include a meet and greet as part of our transition process.
Is there any maths homework we can have, the children read everyday but we don't have much for maths? Children have their KIRF sheets, we can make up some packs of KIRF cards to send home with some ideas of games you can play.
Will be getting minutes from the Gateway meeting? See above
Are you the SENCo? Will this continue next year? Mrs Light-Rowsell has already started to work with some of the SEN children and will be taking on this role more fully in September.

We received a FFT National School Attendance Award as during the Autumn term our attendance was in the top 25% of primary schools (see Dojo for more details).
Next week is looking busy with World Book Day, Mother’s Day breakfast and the Spring Disco (please see Dojo for details of all events). Don’t forget to RSVP to the Mother’s Day breakfast – one guest per family please.
The children had a great time celebrating World Book Day! Thank you to everyone for all the effort with costumes. Today we held our Mother’s Day breakfast. Again, a big thank you to everyone who came along. It was a lovely morning.
In class this week Year 5 learnt about citrus farming in North America and coffee farming in South America. Year R have been looking for the gingerbread man around school and they also made some gingerbread men.
Tonight is the Spring Disco. We hope the children enjoy this event which is run by our PTA.
During Science Week Year 5 explored properties of materials and Year 2 learnt about camouflage. Year 6 looked at coding and programming in computing. Some Year 5 children led a fantastic assembly about the Islamic month of Ramadan.
Today was Red Nose Day. Everyone could wear red to school and there were activities running at lunchtime. Shortly is Celebration Assembly. Our Boom Reader winners for the highest amount of reading this week were … Year 1!
Next Thursday is our Holi Colour Throw on the playground. Don’t forget we have an Inset Day next Friday so school will be closed to pupils.
This week Year 3 thought about being healthy in PSHE and Year 4 learnt how to draw dogs. Year 2 studied stop motion in computing and Year 5 were busy testing properties of materials. Our Boom Reader winners for the highest amount of reading this week were … Year 1!
Yesterday was our Holi Colour Throw. Thank you to everyone who came along to watch. The children had a great time.
Year R had a visit from local police officers and a dental nurse this week and also went to Longdown Dairy Farm. Year 5 did some outdoor art and Year 3 took a trip to Southampton.
Our Boom Reader winners for this week were …. Year 1 … again! Well done Year 1.
Yesterday we had Headteacher Tea and Chat followed by Express Afternoon. This afternoon is our Easter Assembly before we break up for the holidays.
YR have had another busy half term! They have loved getting outside for their weekly OWL sessions and exploring the forest, mud kitchen and slide. World book day was a highlight for Year R! The morning started with a costume parade, followed by creating leaves for their new reading tree. Each leaf displays a story that has been shared in class. In the afternoon we made book buddies (our favourite characters) to read with. There have been more visitors in the classroom and the children have loved watching the frogspawn develop into tadpoles. To launch the new Talk for Writing a letter, some ingredients and a gingerbread man outline were left on the table for the children to find as they arrived in school! All day the children kept an eye out for the gingerbread man looking for clues! With the ingredients they baked their own gingerbread men.
Y1 have been learning about London. They have found out about the Great Fire of London and have been learning to sing "London's Burning" in a round. They have also made taxis! They started by using different construction materials to make wheels, axles and chassis and then moved on to make their own London taxis complete with signs and headlights. In maths they have been learning to play games such as snakes and ladders, practising careful counting and taking turns. During RE week, the children learnt about Purim which is a Jewish festival remembering Esther saving the Jewish people. They also learnt about Mishloach Manot which is the sharing of gifts during Purim. To demonstrate the importance of this, the children made baskets and decorated biscuits to give to a friend in class.
Y2 have had a busy half term! In science they learnt about camouflage and how important it is for prey to adapt in order to avoid being eaten by predators. The class made their own moths and camouflaged them outside. After, they became predators and looked to see they could find the moths which was great fun! In Maths the children have been learning about centimetres. They hunted around the classroom for objects that measured 8cm and learnt that when you measure using a ruler you must start at 0! In OWL there has been a focus on how to use tools safely. In writing, there has been a focus on using adjectives and the importance of descriptive language to make the writing more interesting. A description of The Greedy Dragon was used it to draw a picture which was then labelled with the adjectives.
Y3 loved the visit from Big Mouth Theatre Company back at the beginning of this half term. Everyone loved getting involved even Mrs Roué! In Geography, they have been learning about earthquakes and showed what experts they were by drawing their own diagrams with explanations. In computing there was much excitement as the children were able to explore our new Microbits. They were able to code them to use loops and pauses to make their designs look like they were moving. The class have enjoyed some wet and muddy afternoons in OWL playing in the mud kitchen, mud jumping and mud digging!! They have made dens, water flumes and a shark aquarium and ‘chocolate fountain . The imagination and creativity has been fabulous.
Y4 have been wonderful artists. They learnt how to draw a dog. First they used basic shapes and next added more detail with shading using a pencil. The results were fabulous! Despite it being a wet and soggy day Year 4 had a wonderful time on their trip to Testwood Lakes, they saw loads of wildlife including birds and a few deer. As a class they were beautifully behaved. Owl has been very wet and muddy so the class have made the most of using different tarp setups and which style would suit the weather the best! They have loved den building and games of hide and seek.
Y5 have been scientists exploring properties of materials. They tested cardboard, nylon, plastic, tinfoil, cotton and wood to see if they conduct electricity, are absorbent, waterproof and whether they are reflective, among others. They also started thinking about which materials are best suited for different uses. OWL afternoons have been busy with a focus on how to light a fire and keep it going to cook leek and potato soup! Some children have also been to the pond area to plant some saplings, while they were there they were able to have a quick look into the pond and spotted newts! This is exciting as the pond was relined, so we are really pleased the newts are back. In geography, the children have been learning about citrus farming in North America and coffee farming in South America with a discussion around whether or not we should import food!
Y6 have been using Beetle Blocks to create a code and programme the ‘beetle’ to create a word. The activity required a lot of resilience to correctly plot coordinates, code the beetle to move in the correct order, and to ensure a gap was left between each letter. The children used their computational thinking and programming skills to, eventually, successfully complete their learning. In OWL they have made flour stress balloons, planted some tree saplings around the pond area and were excited to have also seen some newts. They were also really helpful in owl area, and helped Mr Jones move the new mud kitchen sink! The children have all taken part in Bikeability. The instructors were very impressed with the children’s cycling and listening skills and they made us very proud. During RE week, Year 6 explored the Islamic celebration of Lailat al Miraj, remembering Muhammad’s Night Journey. They considered what makes a clean heart, and why the angel Jibreel washed Muhammad’s heart. Also, learning about Jannah (Islamic paradise) that Muslims reach after death and finally exploring the 5 pillars of Islam.
We had a great time celebrating World Book Day! The children came to school in fantastic costumes. Everyone took part in a costume parade in the hall. There were then activities in class such as; writing stories, creating book buddies, creating story finger puppets and even sorting class book cases ready to decorate. There was also DEAR (Drop everything and read)! At lunchtime there was a treasure hunt in the playgrounds with prizes.
We held our Mother's Day breakfast! Lots of Mums, Nans, Dads and other caregivers came along for a drink and a pastry.
Everyone wore red to school and activities were on offer at lunchtime. We had 'Pin the red nose on the Oakfield Owl' indoors and a basketball challenge on the playground.
What a colourful day we had, celebrating the Hindu festival of Holi! 🕉️ Our morning started with an assembly put together by some Year 5 children, sharing the meaning of Holi to the rest of the school. The children then had the best time taking part in the colour throw with their friends on the field.
Year 3 and 4 put on a fabulous Easter production reminding us all of the true meaning of Easter. This was expertly led by our School Ambassadors.
