Miss Bray
What a busy first term we've had!
We've welcomed new families and children in YR who have settled beautifully, our Junior Leadership Team is taking shape and they have already been busy, there have been enrichment activities for every class in KS1 and KS2, and we had our long awaited visit from Ofsted! We have read a draft copy of our report and the published report should be with us very soon. We are really looking forward to sharing this with you so keep an eye on Dojo!
Introducing our new School Ambassadors - Hassan and Poppy, who were voted for by the staff.
They had some very important roles to fulfil this half term; recording the answer message on the school phone, speaking in front of prospective YR parents for 2024 and leading Harvest Festival.
Our School Council have elected their Chairperson and Secretary and delivered leaflets to the houses in the local community to invite them to our Macmillan coffee afternoon.
The School Librarians have been busy at lunchtimes ensuring the books are tidy and in the right places while our Play Leaders have been busy setting up and leading games at lunchtime.
Class teachers have chosen two Class Ambassadors who will greet visitors to their class and explain the learning taking place.
Updates on the new meal orders were given along with work carried out on the pond area over the summer and our plans for this years Y5/6 Residential.
Look out for a uniform poll next half term - we are looking into a burgundy option for a PE top similar to the one staff wear.
We welcome Mrs Muir to the team as an Assistant Teacher. She will be working in Y6 with Mr Cooke. She will also be working three afternoons provide interventions funded by the Government through the National Tutoring Programme.

Honeypot Residential
This year we had the opportunity to send 12 children from Y4 - Y6 to Hampshire Honeypot House. They were able to take part in activities to develop their social and emotional learning skills. These built their confidence in challenging themselves to problem solve and celebrate their capabilities.
What a great (albeit very hot!!) first week we’ve had! The children have settled well into their new classes and have been keen to learn. Year R have had a brilliant week as have our new staff Miss Thompson, Mrs Mead and Mr Jones. There has been lots of fun in the OWL area, discovering creatures, making dens, climbing and digging.
Yesterday was Election Day at Oakfield! The children had the chance to vote for Class Ambassadors and School Council members as well as our two School Ambassadors from Year 6. Some results are in, some are still to be announced ...
This week Year 5 had a Forces Workshop at Paultons and Year 4 looked at cave art. Our Year 2 scientists were investigating gravity and Year R did some fabulous paintings of their families.
Next week is another busy week with an OPFTA meeting after school on Monday and school photos on Tuesday. See Dojo for details of both events. Remember we have an Inset Day on Monday 25th September.
We have been busy adding dates for this term to Dojo and the website. These will be updated regularly. Please check either source for information.
This week Year 4 had a trip to Butser Ancient Farm and Year 1 visited Totton Library. Year 5 were historians, Year 3 planted garlic and Year R were very busy making ‘ice cream’ and obstacle courses. Some Year 3/4 students also took part in a Multi Skills Festival at Testwood School. We finish the week with Celebration Assembly.
What a busy week! The children were superstars during our Ofsted visit – we will share news as soon as we can (see Mr Mitton’s Dojo post below for more info). During the week Year 3 have been busy learning about the body and there has been lots of fun at OWL. Today is our Macmillan coffee afternoon – please come along from 2.45pm for a drink and a cake.
Next Thursday is our open afternoon for 2024 starters – feel free to spread the word! Thursday is also School Census Day. Please order a school meal for your child if they are in KS1 or eligible for Universal Free School Meals (see Dojo for details of the menu).
The children have been incredibly busy this week hunting for the unicorn which was spotted on our CCTV last weekend (see Mrs Light-Rowsell’s Dojo post from 4th October).
Year 3 visited a Hindu Temple in Southampton, Year 4 have been practising balancing in PE and Year 5 learnt about the pentatonic scale in music.
Yesterday we held an open afternoon for September 2024 starters which was well attended. Another is planned for November - please head to our website to sign up https://www.oakfield.hants.sch.uk/our-academy/admissions
This week Year 6 took part in Mini Medics first aid training, Year 5 were lighting fires at OWL and Year R made Autumn wreaths. Yesterday we had our Reading Challenge Celebration. Children had a story with an adult of their choosing and a craft activity. This was followed by extra play time and an ice lolly. We have just a had a lunchtime visit from our PSCO so lots of the children enjoyed asking questions.
Week 7
This week Year 6 have been busy! They had a trip to Solent Sky Museum and also spent time dissecting pig’s hearts. The whole school took part in yesterday’s Harvest Festival and we were delighted to be joined by so many parents.
Parent Consultations take place the week after half term (2nd and 3rd November). Please book your appointments through Arbor.
The Maths Workshop which had been planned for September has been rescheduled for 8th November – see the Dojo event for more details.
There are lots of other events happening next half term so keep an eye on Dojo for details. Please also check OWL, PE and Library days on Dojo as some have changed.
YR have had a fantastic start to the year. They love using their outdoor area, building obstacle courses and getting muddy in the mud kitchen, even the rain doesn't stop them!
Phonics teaching is going well with children remembering the sounds they have been taught and there have been lots of maths learning including looking at repeating patterns.
Y1 love getting muddy and creative in OWL. They have been working hard on their letter formation and addition and subtraction. In their topic learning they have been colour mixing and could confidently talk about Primary and Secondary colours. They have also taken inspiration from James Dyson becoming engineers and building shelters. They first needed to design their shelter, thinking about the resources that were available in the classroom. Then they had a first attempt at building it and after feedback they improved their structures where needed.
Y2 have had a busy half term. After talking about Albert Einstein they donned thier aprons and explored a variety of messy mixtures including shaving foam, jelly cubes, oil and water and gloop (cornflour and water). They thought about the 5 senses and which ones were being used at each station as well as describing the mixtures, then recorded their thoughts in giants speech bubbles!
In RE week the children learnt about the Hindu festival of Navratri, later in the term, some of the children shared their learning in an assembly.
Y3 have been checking out the vegetable patch and researching Stonehenge. In Art, they have been colour mixing to match the colours of famous paintings. There has been some tricky maths adding crossing the 10s and lots of fantastic writing.
Y4 have improved their balancing skills in PE, used tools in OWL, practised moving in time with the rhythm of the music and challenged each other to use grid references on maps.
Y5 have had a fantastic start to the year. In OWL they have been practising their fire lighting skills, learning patience and resilience. Back in the classroom they have learnt about the pentatonic scale in music, used concrete resources to show additions of numbers within the 10,000s in maths and explored tints, tones and shades to create moods in art.
Year 5 have also been historians, ordering ancient Chinese dynasties and finding out how the first dynasty began
Y6 have learnt all about Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish New Year - which included exploring the traditions and also tasting some delicious apple and honey! OWL has given lots of opportunities to light fires and practise tying knots. Reading and Science have linked together with children reading Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman while dissecting a pig heart in science. They have also been historians, analysing sources about trenches, exploring the reasons why men volunteered to fight in WW1 and even recreating the Schlieffen plan - Germany’s failed attempt to conquer Europe in 1914.
To celebrate the amount of reading our children did over the summer, we held a Reading Celebration. The children chose a story to listen to and then took part in a craft activity. This was followed by an ice lolly and extra playtime!
We held a coffee and cake afternoon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support with parents and staff donating cakes.
The School Council worked with Miss Bray to plan the event, inviting local residents and sorting out refreshments. On the day they were involved with setting everything up, making decorations, welcoming visitors and ensuring the milk was replenished. They raised £216.52!
What a fantastic celebration we had for our Harvest Festival! It was lovely to see so many parents join the whole school at Testwood Baptist Church. Thank you to our wonderful children who amazed us with their fantastic harvest themed learning - they were all superstars. A special shout out to our School Ambassadors for leading the celebration. Thank you to everyone who donated to the Basics Bank - we are so lucky to be part of such a generous community.
