We learned some background knowledge about isopods (roly-polies, pill bugs, wood lice). Fun fact, isopods breathe through gills, no wonder they live in damp places! Another important fact is isopods eat fallen leaves and dead stuff on and underground.
We designed a test to see what would happen if we introduced heat and light into their habitat. A heat lamp was added to one half of a terrarium and the other half was left cool. Thermometers were placed on each side to collect temperature data. Students decided to count the number of isopods on each side of the tank every minute.
We noticed that the isopods preferred the cooler side of the tank, but they did travel back and forth. Students especially loved a pill bug we named "Rocket" who was a super speedy traveler.
We learned that isopods prefer habitats around 72-73 degrees. So it made sense for the bugs to travel to the cooler side.
Then we read an article, "Feathered Friends," that featured a Common Poorwill, Great Horned Owl, and Northern Cardinal. Students were asked to research habitat, how they warm in the winter, food, and how birds use matter and energy from food. Then we compared this information to what we learned about isopods.
Consumers (animals that eat plants, other animals, and dead stuff) use food for matter and energy to move, grow, repair injuries, and regulate body temperature.
