We wanted to find out where plants gets the matter they need to grow. We had ideas based on our previous investigations that plants may need air, water, and sunlight. We ruled out soil since plants did not take in soil, but the micronutrients in the soil.
We determined that matter has weight, so we needed to weigh air, water, and sunlight. Students designed an experiment to weigh those variables.
students used a beach ball to weigh air. We noticed a very small change in weight with the inflated beach ball.
students used a cup to weigh water. We noticed that water was heavy.
students used a cup to weigh light. We noticed that the scale did not change. then we tried just weighing the light beam. Again, there was no change in weight. We concluded that light is energy, and energy is different from Matter.
We drew a model to provide evidence that air has weight and takes up space.
