LESSON 1: How does a fallen tree become a nurse log?
In this first lesson, students observe pictures and video of fallen trees that are supporting many other things in the forest to live and grow. They learn that scientists call these nurse logs. Students develop initial models to explain how a fallen tree becomes a nurse log and create a class consensus model. Students brainstorm related phenomena. The class shares questions about nurse logs to create a Driving Question Board and ideas for investigations to pursue next. (OpenSciEd 5th)
First we created a classroom agreement so that all students know the expectations for shared experiences and discussions.
We can do science in many different ways.
We can share ideas even when we are unsure.
We look, listen, and respond to each other's ideas.
We let our ideas change and grow.
We looked at several examples of fallen trees. We noticed that they had moss and other kinds of plant life growing on top and around them. We noticed different kinds of fungi. We even noticed that trees roots were growing through the logs. We wondered how trees were growing on top of the logs, how did the moss get there, and what kind of animal life lived on and around the logs.
We created a model to explain our thinking about how fallen logs can become nurse logs.
We compared our models. We found similarities and differences. Then we came together in a scientist circle to agree on a model we feel explains our class's thinking about how nurse logs come from fallen trees.
We looked over our initial models, related phenomenon, and notice/wonder chart, and each student asked a question that we could find out more about. We also brainstormed ways we could answer questions.
