Reflection
During all the toy designing process throughout the semester, I think the documentation video about play value at the very beginning really influenced me a lot. When designing the toy, I constantly thought about how to make the toy more playful and open-ended rather than having a fixed way to play for everyone. So, I decided to make a collaborative toy that can engage people’s attention, tension, and concentration. It reflects the concept of diversity and inclusiveness because it is designed for children with ADHD or autism. For children with ADHD, helping them practice patience and concentration is a very necessary intervention. Doing this in the form of a toy is a more acceptable and engaging way. In addition, during the process of playing the toy, you need to communicate with your peer to figure out more strategies to play. This kind of interaction is simple and direct, so it won't make children feel uncomfortable. This toy requires concentration, practice, thinking, and communication.
What I'm most proud of is decorating the toy to make it look more attractive. I used small needle felted fish as obstacles and added cute characters to create a sense of connection between the toy and the player. What I struggled with the most was that the 3D printing issues, but I received a lot of help from Dalin and Marcela, and I’m very grateful. If I had more time, I would further improve the user experience, because most people gave feedback that the toy is a bit difficult. I would add some fabric on both sides of the boat to increase friction. According to the professor's advice, I would also add two supports at the start and end points to help the boat start and stop more easily.
