A diptych, in other words, is using two different images to tell a complete story. These images need to be connected, either in terms of time or space. For me, the most important aspect of this project is to tell a story. I’ve already thought of many different approaches, and in the end, I decided to use a diptych to illustrate a connection between the past and present.
For the first photo, I will look for a suitable art gallery to capture an image of an ancient Chinese painting featuring landscapes, pavilions, and towers. The scenery in these paintings perfectly represents the style and atmosphere of ancient China and is highly artistic. This will serve as my interpretation of the 'past' in my work.
For the second image, which will be a collage, I have two options. The first is to go to the Bund and the Oriental Pearl Tower to capture some skyscrapers and modern architectural elements. At the same time, I will photograph some contemporary green spaces. Through these elements, I can highlight the significant contrast between ancient and modern architecture and landscapes.
The second option is to visit Yu Garden to showcase the mix of ancient and modern architecture within the urban setting, illustrating the remnants of the past in modern life.
As for the use of Photoshop, following my usual routine, I will first go to Xiaohongshu to learn various Photoshop techniques. I plan to select appropriate parts from the photos I take for cutting and collaging. I will layout my collage in the style of traditional Chinese paintings to achieve visual harmony in the composition. For instance, since most ancient paintings are arranged vertically, I will follow the same format for my collage. Additionally, I will adjust the tone and color temperature of each image to make the overall picture more cohesive.
