Gendered fashion and the protests with Black Lives Matter Movement inspired my work. In my old school I know people who wear crop shirts, skirts and overall feminine clothing but it doesn’t make them any less of boy but I know from my family and friends that there are still people who think that way, that a man wearing feminine clothing makes the, less of a man.
I wanted to create a piece that represents what I have noticed when it comes to gender and sexuality. When learning about the LGBTQ+ community and everything in between, I saw the freedom within the community. Which is something I wanted to express in my art, this is why I wrote the words freedom and equality in red, to match the outline of the balloon. Within the balloon, I wrote words I associate with gender and sexuality, having these words in the balloon references the freedom that incases that part of everyone's identity. I chose to have the girl reaching up to get the balloon because it is hard sometimes to gain acceptance and equality in today's society.
My photo series explores gender as a concept. Is it based on biology? Gender is hazy and confusing but it is also meant to be broken.
