For this project I chose to display Vogue magazine, which has become well-known for its modern fashion, trendy lifestyle articles, and of course, being unafraid to demolish the standard. Vogue has demonstrated to play by its own rules, something that many other grand names refrain from doing. Thus this picture features exactly that, the refusal to abide by the traditional ideas of what clothing and accessories are considered feminine and masculine, hence the models adorning fishnets, skirts, and long earrings.
Vogue is a popular American monthly magazine that often covers many topics including fashion, beauty, culture, living and runway based on New York City. The majority of the magazines covers are women. Wearing dresses. I decided to put a man in a dress that a vogue model would wear.
The product i chose to advertise, Manic Panic, is a popular vegan hair coloring brand that’s known for its vibrant colors and its healthy impact on the environment. I noticed that when it came to advertising beauty products and ideas it would be often be associated with chic women and rarely with men. I thought a casual image of a group of teenagers with dyed hair would be a perfect image to remind the audience that there is really no set binary for cosmetics, we all deserve to present ourselves however we want in the absence of judgement. Which is also why i chose to add the catchphrase, “own your color” aiming to encourage everyone to have confidence with who they are!
I chose to make a collage using the brand Gucci. Gucci has been known to push the boundaries continuing to show various perspectives on gender, color, and societal expectations. I wanted to be able to have a main focal point that went along with what Gucci represents, which is why I decided to incorporate a drag queen into my collage. Drag queens represent the best of freedom and creativity in this world, which is why I found that it was important to add them. To finalize my collage I decided to write the statement, “Let your truth set you free.” I wanted to write a statement that would appeal to everyone, everyone has their own truth that makes them unique, and accepting this truth allows them to be free, and accept who they are.
Vogue is known to be an influential American fashion and lifestyle magazine. I know these magazines usually use women as models and i tried to incorporate a different version in where it is not all female and that there’s more beyond that and just clothes for women and with their representations.
Yves Saint Laurent’s “Libre” perfume that can be used for any gender. Libre means “free”, so people can be free of rigid gender roles and do whatever makes them happy. The yellow overtones not only match the color scheme of the packaging but are gender neutral as well.
