When I knew that we were going to make a toy that represents the idea of diversity and inclusivity, I immediately thought of the idea of changing clothes, because I always wanted to make such a toy (also I intended to add this element into my project 2 but I did not have sufficient time back then). When I actually started to make the toy, I found I always had new inspirations, so the final project was a bit different from the original plan in my proposal. When thinking of the body of the toy, I came up with the idea of using a 3D-printed skeleton since this could best represent the idea of inclusivity---every human being has the same skeleton inside. I believe with the decorations of flowers on the skeleton, it can show the idea that what matters most is your beautiful inside, thus encouraging people to be confident in their outside appearance, because whatever their outside appearance is like, it won't conceal their beautiful inside. All people should have the right and confidence to be whatever they like💖
The final version of the toy enables players to change its facial expression and hair, and also allows them to create their own versions of clothes for the toy with watercolor pigments!! I decided to add the process of recreating to the play experience of my toy (also thanks Marcela for providing me with the suggestion of using pigments for the players to create their drawings~), because after taking this course, I found that the function of inspiring creativity of a toy really matters to me, and this is what makes a toy have unique meanings to different players.
The body of the skeleton actually took me a long time to make because the 3D printer always went wrong... I made around 5-6 failed models, and eventually got the final version of it. Removing the supports from the body was also difficult since the skeleton was too thin and fragile.
If I have more time, I think I would consider to make the skeleton more detailed using the 3D printer in fab lab since the LA said that printer worked better for detailed stuff such as my skeleton...
The coat for the toy was another difficulty I met. I got the suggestion from Marcela that I should use transparent cloth such as tpu to make the cloth, so that the colorful inside of the body can be seen (thank you prof!!🥹) However, when I was testing the tpu, I found that this kind of fabric was really easy to stick together and made it so hard to sew... So I chose another transparent fabric to make the coat and sticked the tpu on it. (It was also very hard to make a coat!! Never imagine it would be that hard to sew clothes for toys...🥲)
I have already spent so many hours working on the coat (I made several coats and eventually got one comparatively better), but if I have more hours, I believe I would like to make more so that the coat would look better and more delicate🫡
