This assignment requires me to be more familiar with needle felting techniques and eventually to make a project. So I first made a small project for practice, which is a little panda and I sticked it together with a hairpin so that it could serve as a cute decoration.
A rough sketch for the panda. (since there is no black hair in the studio so I just thought to paint the black parts with pigment...)
The needle felting panda that has not been sticked with the hairpin.
I found it a bit ugly because I found no black fur to make its black parts, but the pigment was not very satisfying since it would stain the white part and make the whole figure look dirty...
The final look of the panda hairpin was also not that satisfying...
It looked good though when I actually pinned it on my head, since the panda was small enough so that it was hard to really tell its unsatisfying details.
This is the sketch for my actual weekly 5 project, which is a prototype of a teddy beard puppy.
The original model of the teddy bear puppy.
Starting to add the brown fur to it.
During the process where I was making the needle-felting teddy bear puppy, I found it hard to connect different body parts of the puppy together, and when I tried to connect them, the different parts would be flattened and the shape would not be the original perfect shape. Besides this, when I was adding the brown felt to the model, I also found it was hard to maintain the original shapes because another layer would make the model thicker and make the shape of the original model less obvious.
Also, when adding the brown felt, it was hard to make the cover thin and at the same time really perfect, so the figure of a teddy bear puppy became less obvious at last due to the thick felt...!
But I'm glad that the final outcome turned out to be good... I only used little pigment to paint its eyes and nose this time based on my trial and error from the previous panda hairpin, and indeed I found it work this time! This somehow also fixed the problem of lacking an obvious shape brought by the previous process, since with the eyes and nose it's much easier for everyone to tell this is a cute teddy bear puppy:)
